Default Correct gearing for DD

I'm looking into getting my first jeep. It's a 99 sport with a 4 inch lift on 33's. I'm trading my car so it will be my DD... and I drive 35 miles on the highway to work every day. Now, I've read others saying that with 33's as a DD you should look into getting new gears. Cash is a little tight and I'm wondering what my best option would be in terms of trying not to empty the bank...New gearing or just getting 31's instead for now?

The other issue is the guy before didn't do any trimming whatsoever. So I'm pretty sure I'd be doing that too if I stuck with the 33's.

I appreciate the help!

Unfortunately, if I end up getting it, I'm going to have to go about a month before I get new 31's... That is unless I spot some up for trade. Anyway, do you think it will have any affects on the tranny if I have to go a little while on the 33's?

You can run up to 33s without having to re gear, any bigger than 33 re gearing is a must imo

What are the downsides to having 33's with stock gears? Would it just be gas mileage or is there something else I should be concerned about?

yea the MPGs are HORRIBLE!!! but its not that bad if your eventually save for the gears! If you put 33s on now go get some 703 injectors throttlebody spacer and relocate you IAt sensor then upgrade your airintake to a cone intake and it should restore some of your MPG....

I have a 98 sport with a 4in lift and 33x10.5 and it runs fine. I get 15-18 mpg. Not great but not terrible. I was trying to follow the previous post but didn't follow ya at all. Lol

I can understand the mileage suffering and the speedo being off, but I wouldn't think the tach would be wrong. The tach just measures engine RPM. It shouldn't be affected by tire size.

but, to the OP. your gas mileage will suffer and youll be putting a little more strain on the transmission and motor.

You can prolly get gears for bout the same price as 31s. and depending on the wheels you have you may not be able to run the common 31x10.5.

You'll also notice the truck is sluggish with that large of tire and stock gearing.

Not too horrible, though.
