Default converting from 2.5lt 4cyl. to a 2.8 V6

has anyone done a 2.8 or 4.3 swap into a cherokee that originally had a 2.5lt 4 cyl.

1. my 4 cyl. is carburated so no computer

2. since 2.8 was a stock option, motormounts, exhaust manifolds, flywheel will all match up. just get at Pull-and-Save JY.

3. 5 speed manual and 207 transfercase should hold up fine

am I missing anything? or just straight forward?

You want to swap a 4 banger for a 2.8 V-6? I wouldn't swap a turd for a turd.If you're going to the trouble to do a swap go with the 4.3,302, or any V-8.Too much involved & you'll wish you had went bigger.

'80-83 4 cylinders share the same pattern as a V-8.'83 & newer 4's share the same pattern as the 2.8.

Do it once & do it right.

I would much rather have the 2.5 over the 2.8.

Agreed, the 2.5 may be kinda weak (at least with the wrong gearing), but the 2.8 is just as weak and it's junk to boot.

A bolt-in replacement for the 2.8 POS was a 3.4L so at the very least, use one of those if you do. Otherwise, go 4.0L or V8 swap.

Use the Camaro 3.4 instead. It will bolt in with 2.8 stuff and has 160 hp. It is a good motor

my 2.5 is real tired, but like the rig, soooo, thought a mild built 2.8 would be good idea, now how much better is the 4.3 vs 2.8

I REALLY WANT A STRAIGHT FORWARD SWAP how much modification to put in V8? what size of v8 and outta what? will my 5 speed hold up?

what year camaro did they use 3.4 lt? what carb did you run with your 4.3? how did your 4.3 swap go? will a 4.3 bolt in with 2.8 motormounts? will my 5 speed tranny bolt up to a 3.4lt or 4.3lt? can't find info on doing this swap? can you give me any headsup on finding this swap? thanks

The 4.3 is as difficult a swap as any V8. Same stuff, just shorter. Mine is fuel injected with the electronic shift 4L60E. I am happy with it, but it was a lot of work. The 3.4L as well as the 3.1L are available in several versions of Chevy cars. All accept the early ones have fuel injection of some type. The throttle body type are the easies to do, they have a self contained computer that doesn't affect anything else. I have one I am putting in another rig right now. All of them though have intakes and carbs available from Edelbrock so you can convert the over if you want. Google the GM 60 degree V6 and you will see what is available and go from there.

If your motor is tired i would personally find a renix era fuel injected 4 cylinder jeep and swap everything over. They can be had cheap. I had one in a comanche i bought for 600 bucks, didnt put a penny into it after that. 27 mpg no matter how i drove it. Never should have sold it.

If I were to go renix fuel injected 4 cylinder, would I need the whole wiring harness or is there a aftermarket harness that makes it easier to swap.?

what model and yrs were they available? I'm ok with my 4 cyl. but I have to shift all the way to 3rd and even 2nd on real steep hwy hills, going 35 up a hwy hill gets me some real funny looks!

otherwise jeep runs great, I have 3.73 gears by the way

the 2.8 is a crap motor. I know nothing about the jeep 4 cylinders, but I'm almost positive you'll be taking a step back.

One of the cheapest and best things you can do to a 2.8 is put some Bosch +4 plugs in it. You will get an increase of 1000 rpms on the top end and the horsepower that goes with it.
