Consequences of Mismatched Gear Ratios
It's not necessary to pull the driveshaft. I drove around for a while with mismatched gears before I got around to replacing the gears in my front axle (and we're not talking a small mismatch) with no adverse affects. Yes it's true that everything is spinning even when the 4wd is not engaged but it's just spinning free in the transfer case until the 4wd is engaged. Obviously this applies only to a part time 4wd transfer case like the NP231.
Now if you're afraid someone else might drive the jeep in the meantime and unknowingly engage the front axle then you might want to remove it for peace of mind.
