Default Computer can I hook up to my 93 XJ?

I've been playing around with HHO (and getting awesome advice so far from this forum) and it seems like a good idea to get all my current data before I start testing boosters, so I can better track my progress, if any.

Googling it I see there are these "trip computers" and there are the EFIE and MAP/MAF sensor mod chips for the engine. But, I was thinking more along the lines of a real computer that could read the output from all the sensors and maybe even let me adjust them?

Is that too sci-fi for reality yet? Or if it exists, is there anything affordable for the regular joe?

Seems to me that all you'd need is some kind of interface or adapter and I could plug in a desktop computer to it and use software to diagnose and stuff.

But, maybe I'm dreaming?

You're very limited on what you can do on an OBDI vehicle. I would just drive it and be happy it runs.

LOL, you guys crack me up. Why are you even here if you're not into getting the MAX out of your Cherokee?

If I was content being happy it runs, I don't think I'd bother with any of this.

Ohhhhh! I finally googled it after wondering why you were apparently telling me to squirt a mega amount of something all over my Jeep.

It's a product, MegaSquirt and just the kind of thing I was asking about. Awesome. Hey, they're not too pricey either. Thanks for the tip!

Hey ericfx1984, these look like just the thing. But, how do I figure out which one would work on my 93? Looks like about one site sells them and they don't have a fancy "choose your vehicle" thingy on the website.

Ok, here we go:
http://www.diyautotune.com/diybob/index.html

But, it only says for sure on 87-90 Cherokees and, "We've also found it used on some Jeeps with Rennix electronics. This list is of known applications, but there may be others."

So, maybe that'll have to wait until I understand the electronics better.

Can anyone tell me if I have "Rennix" electronics?

Ok, sorry. More time and a little more searching and... drum roll please...

Yay, I know a little more about it all now. Looks like I have OBD1.

Now I just need a way to connect something like an old laptop to it so I can hack the controls.

Ideas anyone?

Learning a little more, I realize that this OBD thing is just to read error codes, if any. It wouldn't give me control over the fuel injection or the ecu.

Hmmmm

There really is no way to control the onboard computer that runs the motor, Chrysler saw to that. A megasquirt system would replace the onboard control totally but is not a plug in solution. It needs a good amount of work to get it installed.

I've wondered the same. Something like an AEM or Greedy ecu that would replace the oem computer. The Chrysler tune probably has the engine running rich.

Thanks for the clarification. I tried to understand that squirt stuff but it seems a bit too much. I'm not going to be racing it, that I know of. I'm just a computer guy and I'm becoming a Jeep guy too and it would be nice to combine the two.

I'll figure it out one of these days and I'll let y'all know.
