hope some one can help! is a swap of a command trac np 207 transfer case for a select trac np228/229 transfer case something that is possible ? the reason for this swap is I purchased a 2000 sport model with a 3 1/2 " lift, flow master exhaust and completely rebuilt drive shafts not to mention the body on my 2000 classic with the select trac 4wd is rotted to the gills and the sport models body is in "New England Mint' condition meaning it has some rot but nearly not as much as the sport. I would like to know if a straight out parts swap would be possible and if this is something even worth doing . is the select trac superior to the command trac ? is the benefits of a swap like this worth the trouble? I hope someone can help and again thanks to the whole community

Yes, it is easy to swap the cases but, those aren't the right numbers. The command Trac is a NV231 and the selec-Trac case is a NV242
thanks for the info id like to upgrade the jeep I bought with the select trac transfer case in my current jeep as it looks like it has been replaced with a new case. I got the numbers for the t cases of Wikipedia hence my "newbie" status again thanks for the reply and ill let you know how I made out.
The numbers you mentioned are transfer cases from Jeeps older than yours. Yours has either the 231 or 242. You can tell which one by climbing under the Jeep and reading the number right off the little round badge riveted to the back of the case, like this:
The 242 "Selec-Trac" was usually paired with the AW4 automatic transmission and had the capability of full-time 4WD. If most of your driving is on the street, the 242 is just fine. In fact, I like my 2000's full-time 4WD in the rain because it makes a difference on slick streets.
The 231 was usually paired with the 5-speed. It didn't have the full-time 4WD setting, but it's alleged to be stronger than the 242. What's certain is that there is a lot more aftermarket support for the 231, and that makes it very attractive if your rig is intended primarily for off-road use. I have been very disappointed in the lack of options for slip yoke eliminators for my 242, but there are plenty for the 231. Without full-time 4WD, though, you're not really supposed to use the 231's 4WD on pavement.
I couldn't really make sense of what you want to do, but it really comes down to how you intend to use the truck. I was tempted to swap to a 231 to give myself more aftermarket options, but I think I've just about settled on staying with my 242 so I can keep the full-time 4WD. I'm still using mine primarily on the street. If I were building a dedicated trail rig that wouldn't see much street use, I would probably swap over to the 231.
There are a LOT of incredibly detailed discussions on this subject, here and elsewhere. I would start here:
242 were never paired behind an AX15, that's true. But 231's were paired behind BOTH AW4 and AX15.
In fact in all 6 cherokees I had, none of them ever had a 242 in it. They all had 231's and they were all automatics
A guy I work with has a 2 door with a 242 and an AX-15. I will try to catch him in the morning and get a pic. I have no idea if this is factory or not though.

my jeep im driving now has the 242 in it. I bought a 2000 sport with the 231 that has a 4" lift ,flow master exhaust and an overall body that is in way better shape than my current jeep. 90% of the driving I do is on the street and like you I like the performance in the rain of the full time 4wd. I was asking to see if swapping the 231 for the 242 is worth doing. the links you supplied me are just what I needed to answer all the questions I have about doing this mod. thanks
