I had a 2004 Dodge 2500 4WD with the high output Cummins. I put a functional ram air hood on it, yes they make it for diesels. As long as I was running 45 or more there was a huge difference in power. No, I didn't go mudding with the truck, wouldn't be a good idea with a quad cab long bed, 160.5" wheelbase. Just too long.

any of you guys actually dyno the difference yet?
I could care less about opinion, Let's see some proof of a gain, I simply use the spectre filter, less than k&n and washable, I don't like replacing napa gold filters once a month ahahahhaha
a power gain from a cone filter is not worth it maybe?

Filters, I use a stock location K&N the others Cold Air Kits add nothing in real results that I have saw. Had 2 different ones a Specter and a K&N both went, back to stock for the extra protection from water, mud while off road.
Oil filters/Oil/Spark Plugs that's a whole different story they are all cheap even the NAPA Gold filters that really do filter the oil. But for those of you who doubt just buy a Fram, Wal-Mart, or house brands filters at the oil change places there cheap. As for oil you still can buy reclaimed motor oil also cheap if that what you want to run, run it.
If these items are going to break your budget for your off roading XJ or DD you may need to consider selling it and buying a cheap, low maintenance car for your needs.

I for one didn't slap this intake on there and go boom gains. Not my expectation at all maybe a horse or two way up there and a couple pounds. She's smoother running I'd say. Now, when I do a header, exhaust, bored tb I'll be no doubt producing/making whatever, more power than you guys with your stock air box...won't be huge but it'll be apparent. When I had an s10 my buddies younger and better running very similar vehicle always got edged out cause he had the stock air box

There's been about a million articles written on CAI and Oil Inpregnated air filters. In most cases, when properly oiled up, actually allow less air flow than a paper element. If more air gets through then it stands to reason that more particles of dust will as well.
The only advantage to a oil Inpregnated filter is they can be cleaned and reused and in the long run will be cheaper.
A quick google search will bring up a plethora of articles written by people with the means to test these filter and if they make a difference. You will see a theme develop, in most cases the rob the engine of power.
So you buy a CAI and throw it on your jeep. It comes with a fancy filter, some new tubing and a heat shield. The tubing is where you would likely see any performance gain, not the filter, they filters themselves provide no performance gain. Typically the tubes are larger, and smooth and more efficient. Their increased size allows more filter air to be kept in the tube itself, which explains people saying "the throttle response is better". This is easily explained, since the tubing itself holds more air than the stocker, when you stomp the throttle there's a bit more air availible when throttling up from an idle.
At best, these CAI systems, will allow for better throttle response and that about it. At worst they allow more dirt into your engine.
I challenge someone to show me some dyno results that show me a increase in hp/torque by simply installing one of these systems. From a credible independent source with a properly oiled filter.
For me I'll stick with a high quality paper element in the stock air box and save a few hundred dollars.
