Default CNG xj?

i know that there are a crap load of chevy cavaliers that are CNG (Compressed Natural Gas). there are also a bunch of dodge ram vans and ford f150s that have the setup too. my parents bought a chevy cavalier that had CNG on it and it does pretty good. $5 to fill up the 8 gallon tank and they can go 130-150 miles on it. they get about the same mileage as regular gas its just a lot cheaper. i was just wondering if it would be worth it to try and do it on an xj.

Do the math. Sure CNG is half the price of gasoline, but you have only half the range of gasoline, the cost of the conversion, and the lack of filling stations that have CNG. It's just not worth it. Plus the CNG tanks have to be tested and replaced after 15 years. I work on a fleet of vehicle and have CNG F250 trucks, Cavaliers, and Honda Civics. I drove the F250 and found it would use a half a tank in only 80 miles and I had to really plan my route around where CNG was available. California sucks for CNG availablity.

A lot of guys here in Canada run Propane. Why? Well the 4L can be converted fairly cheaply and its almost 1/4 the price of gas with slightly less mileage. The only down side is you cant drive it in the winter. Which isnt an issue with a trail rig.

A propane system or a dual fuel set up is easier than piecing together a CNG system. The propane systems I worked on had the heater hoses hooked up to the mixer to keep the propane from freezing up.

One of my long term goals with my XJ is to go propane and a HEI distributor. It's very simple to convert, the only problem is tank location. Legally for road use it is supposed to be in the bed, not in or inder or on top of the vehicle. There are excetions for buses, but not XJ's. I plan on running mine inside.

You have to check local and state laws

Regardless of the law you should use common sense, mounting tanks on the roof creates a missile in an accident. Please dont.

Which is why I want to mount mine on the inside. On the bottom where the tank would have been is a boom waiting to happen, then on the roof, if you ever rolled over you are gone, but inside a passenger compartment is illeagle.

you can use LPG systems during winter. dont worry.
