if it's only when you get on the throttle i can just about guarentee you its your drivers side engine mount. these jeeps are known for this and i just replaced mine at 88k miles, it was destroyed!

ok so i put my bumper back on my XJ and now that clunking only happens while at a stand still. My bumper is pretty heavy duty with a tire carrier, so it is obviously taking some weight off the front end . does this change your thinking at all??

Exactly what mine would do. Here is what you do. Look at the engine mount first of all. Mine you could clearly see it was bad. Have someone stand on the side of your jeep and watch that engine mount. Put your foot on the brake and ease into the throttle until you hear the noise. This is how we pin pointed my problem.
even when you hit a bump?

dont know how it happened...but they must have popped off somehow!
