In swapping from 27 spline shafts to 29 spline shafts do I have to change the pinion gear on the 27 spline housing too ?

no, pinion gear should stay with the ring gear. You only swap shafts and spider gears or install a 29spline locker.

You will need a 29-spline carrier.

I'm not arguing but I'm confused by this. I was under the impression the axle spline inserts into the spider gears on each side. Is this false? Is the carrier different depending on the spider gears?

For stage 1 of my build I'm thinking to upgrade to 29-spline shafts and a lunchbox to match. I'd eventually like to do a Detroit Locker and re-gear but can't afford that right now. I'd like to throw out as little as possible during stage 2.

You need a 29 spline carrier because the 29 spline shafts are bigger in diameter than the 27 spline shafts.

I agree and I'd love to just buy an already "built" 8.8. It's just not in the budget for a few years.
