C-clip won't seat when replacing axle u-joint

Nah its anti-seize spatter. Does look like cracks though 
BTW I learned this from a shop, when I couldn't get the joints out of those old shafts with a press or a vice, they showed me a way to beat them out with just a table and a hammer. I had the same reaction you guys are having but the shop says they never had any problems with it, and I can attest, several years and several thousand miles no issues

If you have to beat on something to get it in you're doing it wrong. Best thing for the job is to rent/buy/make a u-joint press tool. Once you use the proper tool, you'll kick yourself for ever using a hammer in the first place.
