I've got a bit of a weird problem that I need help with. A couple of weeks ago I did the rear brake conversion and all went fairly well. The problem I'm having is my brakes are heating up like crazy. The rims get so hot you are unable to touch them, you can even smell the metal,( if that makes sens). The front stay nice and cool. The only thing I can think of is the rotors I bought are regular type but the pads are ceramic. Am I crazy in thinking that maybe the ceramic is too hard and therefore not causing enough friction resulting in the heat build up I'm experiencing?
I've pulled the wheels off and removed the calipers but everything looks good. I'm really at a loss right now and cant think what else it could be.
Any advise or tips are welcome, thank you.
Its a 1998 cherokee sport, 8.25, 3.55 gears, tires 33x12.5x15. The pads, rotors, calipers and even the park brake shoes are new.

It sounds like the calipers are not releasing fully. Try looking at the slides and make sure they are lubed so they can slide back and forth easily.

I checked the ebrake and it does'nt touch anything right now. I think the wheel bearings are good, had them replaced about 2 years ago. I was thinking the calipers may be draging as well but the 2 bolts that hold it on are lubed up( thats what you mean by the sliders, correct?).

Did you replace the proportioning valve? If not that's probably most the problem use one from a zj and try that

 

Yes I did. I bled the PV and then bled all four wheels after. The PV I got was from the same rig I got the brake hardware from.

 

So just to be clear, using ceramic pads with regular rotors should be fine right?

 

Yeah that's fine. Something is dragging, be it your calipers are stuck/seized, ebrake is too tight or a wheel bearing has pooped out. Pull the wheels and spin by hand.

 

Yea I'm kinda thinking somethings dragging as well. I'll open it up on my next day off and take a better look.
