big tires small lift?
Well I have hit a spot in my build where I am torn between different ideas. I have aquired a set of 35 inch tires. Once I finally got them on my jeep at stock height I really liked the lower look. So my question is should I do 4.5 inch lift or 3? Is a 1.5" difference that big a deal? Im not worried about trimming or rubbing. This jeep is not a serious rock warrior nor will it be a mall crawler. It will be used. More for trails and exploring just for fun. I may go bigger eventually but for now im keeping things cheap and simple but not cutting corners. Any thoughts?

I'd go with a 3". I'm running 33's on 1.5" of lift, minimal trimming, bumpstopped, and still have better flex than my buddys stock XJ, and I'm about to increase the downtravel up front to make it even better. And I wheel my Jeep hard, it works great.

Here is a thread about LCOG setups. It may help you a little with your decision.

Thanks for the solid input. I think 4.5 sounds like the better way to go

OP take a look in the LCOG thread, its a great thread that will give you an idea of what you would need to do for using a bigger tire on a small lift.

not being a di** but but its not solid info, take a look around the forum and you can see a lot with 33" and 35" and they are only running 3" of lift. it really does come down to how you bump stop it and how you set it up. if you wanted to be at 3" and 35", then I would trim the front and rear fenders, maybe even a cut and fold the rear quarter panel, get a properly back spaced wheel, bent or offset lca and adjustable uca, longer travel shocks and most importantly bump stop it.

Either way the jeep will be stable. I'm a fan of low rigs ( mine is about 5" right now on 40's) but from 3-4.5" won't be noticeable in stability, but it will be in ground clearance. The extra belly height is nice. Then bump stop properly and have fun.

If your tires are smashing into your fenders, then you are doing something wrong.
Many people run 35's on a 3" lift, taller lifts don't magically stop suspension compression, but bumpstops do.
