thats kind of a confusing statement. you look up at all the trail rigs because they are on 38"+ tires and youre on maybe 33" tires, the tires alone give them 2.5" more lift, so them on 5.5" = you on 8" lift. Guys that are serious about rocks run low lift and big tires, not big lift and big tires. Just take a look at the guys that run KOH...

Granted I am only on 31s right now until an axle change, but lets get real here. My roof line is at the same height as the new minivans. I was next to TJs, YJs and Yotas and there was more than the 3" difference a set of 38s would give me. If you look at the pic I posted, a 4.5" lift would not have cut it at all. It is just a difference in where and how you wheel. If I had a mud runner, I could be lower.

roof line isnt as important as COG, new minivans with your roof line have a COG probably a foot or more below yours. I wheel in rocks that size and larger without any issue on 4.5 and 33"s. Im just trying to make it clear that when you say you can stay low for mud but need to go high for rocks, your back asswards. Dont mean to be rude or anything, but take a look at pirate4x4, even NAXJA, you wont find anyone excited about 8" lifts, but you will find people loving 40s on 5"

thats the truth right there.
I would go down more, but I like the uptravel. when I do axles, Ill go 37's at the same height, but I think the width will help with clearance.

I guess you run on small rocks. Please see the pic I posted. Doing what you suggested I would have had to stretch winch line and scrape the underside on granite. And as far as Pirate goes, I ran into a guy from pirate running a TJ on his way down to Fordyce who is building an XJ for his wife. Had to look up at his toddlers in the back seat. Followed by a guy in a Yota where my eye level was at the middle of his door and on and on it goes. And as for mud, I was doing that in OR probably before you were born. One thing you must realize, as well as the rest of the forum. Just because you are running something, doesn't mean it is the best or that it is the best for someplace else in the country. Our lifts here reflect the type of wheeling we do. Now granted, I am not running a sports car. I have a Subaru for that. And also, I have plans for full width axles, which I have most of the stuff for including ARBs. And there will be 38s on it. As far as low COG goes, I am all for it. If I could I would. But it is not practical in this part of the country if you want to run with just about any of the dogs, big or medium. One thing I would appreciate though is a greater measure of courtesy to forum users. I am sure the OP would appreciate an answer to his question instead of an attack on what he wants to do. A word of caution where appropriate, yes. However he has his reasons and as far as I am concerned, those are good enough.

It is just a matter of perspective. You are welcome to follow me anytime to see my point.

Hayward is not so far from where we were. It doesn't take long to get to I80 and follow it to the Eagle Lakes turn off.

I'm not sure what kind of mud you have in Cali, but the rest of the world goes higher for mud, not lower.

guaranteed with 33s and lockers F/R I could follow a 31" open/open on 8" without any trouble, and then take a path that will put you on your lid

I was at hollister a couple weeks ago just taking paths and some which are VERY tippy, to the point where I was on edge a number of times. Do you really think that with 8" you wont tip where 4.5" is right on the edge? really?

Lift does NOTHING but allow for larger tires. Nothing brings the axles any further from the ground than larger tires. Of you have 50" of lift and 31" tires, the diff will still be at the same height as you would on 3"would of lift and 31s.
