Everyone has summed it up already.
1st thing you need is recovery -
some way to get your butt out if you get stuck, dont matter if its on a rock or in the mud or w/e. Wether it be a winch or tow points & straps; you have to be able to get out with or without help.
2nd thing you need is armor -
if you plan on wheeling more than once, you are going to need a way to protect from damage.
Skid plates for the engine, gas tank, transfer case are essential - after that would be body armor and roll cages.. without a skid plate you might break something, even if its doing something small like baby rocks
(I put a very small hole in my gas tank on small rocks, stuff that I could normally drive over - i was coming down a hill, and when i got level - the downward travel in the back, kept going and i hit and next thing you know, I had a hole. and im sitting on 31s and 3" i was able to patch it with some glue / silicone stuff to drive it home but if it would of been bigger, i would of been screwed for sure.)
3rd thing you need is spares -
this would cover spare tire, spare draglink/tie rod, spare drive shaft, tools, flash light, food, gas, water, cash
cause if your driving it there, that means you plan on driving it home and if you break something you arent driving anywhere.
everything after that is a matter of choice.
upgrade tie rod & drag link, upgrade axels, lockers, etc...
oh and if at all possible, in the top 3 things you need, wheeling with a friend should be up there, just in case something happens you have a way home or a way to get out/unstuck or to help turn a wrench.
Happy trailing
