Default Best Lockers for ‘96 Cherokee

Hey y’all, looking to install some front and possibly rear lockers on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee was wondering what recommendations you have for them.

I have Spartans in the front and rear, they work good for what I use it for.

I have a spartan in the rear....nothing up front.

The most wheeling I do these days is hunting, which sometimes requires knowing how to wheel, but most times. it's just navigating sloppy mudholes & slick clay for long distances.

other mods:
4.5" of lift w/SYE
31's
GC upper & lower arms w/drop brackets
SS extended brake lines all around

.

What mods are done? Tire size? Intended use of the Jeep?

I'm a fan of lunchbox lockers like the Spartan or Lock Right or similar for cost and ease of installation reasons but they may not always be the best option. FWIW I run a No Slip up front (very quiet you can't even tell it's there most times) and am Open in the back but my Jeep is also near stock height running 235s and isn't a trail Jeep. It's a daily driver that's also my exploration and camping rig.

So far thats done is a 3.5 inch rough country lift, 31in all-terrains, and new front and rear bumpers everything else is stock.

I run a TORQ Locker in the front and am putting an Aussie locker in the rear as soon as it shows up in the mail. Mines lifted 4.5" and is my daily driver. Aside from the usual popping in very tight turns, I have no problems at all.

I'm running Spartan lockers front and rear. For what they are, they're great, and I don't have anything bad to say about them. Just realize that lunchbox lockers make noise in tight turns, and the front loses a bit of steering ability when in 4wd, it doesn't radius like an open diff. Overall I'm happy with my purchase. That said, next time around, I'm planning on selectable lockers, whether it's air or electric, I really don't care, but I'd like the option to choose when I want locked diffs and when I don't.

Once you get use to having a locked rear you will be lost without one and the front locked makes for a unstoppable ride in snow! ice is a different thing altogether it will come down more to the tire you are running and with a carful right foot a locked rear again will be your friend after getting use to it. just remember on ice slow and easy always wins!

One of my buds had a 1996 2 door manual trans with the 8.25 and D30 that we put Aussie lockers in both.

It drove ok on road but that clicking and clacking going around corners was enough for me to say I’ll just put a selectable locker in the rear and roll with that.

i decided on a OX for the 8.25 and have been very happy with it. Not cheap but good parts usually aren’t 🙂

This XJ been up things that it probably shouldn’t been but just keeps on trucking 😁

Would a front locker still click and clack while on 2wd?

It will still ratchet when you go around corners, I have 85w140 gear oil in mine and that quiets them down some.
