What's the hotness for people not looking to spend $~500 on trucklites? I've already upgraded the harness.

H4 conversion, get bulbs + housings. Autopal makes decent housings I am told.

I recently installed the Autopal E-Code kit. They are a great upgrade over sealed beams for the money (about $43 delivered, including bulbs). The improvement in lighting is very noticeable but obviously they are not going to be the same as a $500 set of high-tech lights.

I don't know how Autopal compares with the leading brands of H4 conversions such as Cibie or Hella but they are less than 1/2 the cost. Really they're not all that much more expensive than buying a new set of sealed beams. As far as I can tell the Autopal lights are well-made but one of the guys here with industry experience would be the better qualified to judge that.

Do the relay harness upgrade as well, if you haven't already. I'm interested in your impressions of the Autopals. Good cutoff? HID compatible?

Thanks.

I had already installed a relay harness so that part is covered. I'm liking the Autopals quite a bit. They work much better than the old sealed beams, noticably better visibility at night, and the cutoff looks good. There have been no issues with people flashing high beams at me.

I did check the aim using the instructions here:

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html

I have no idea if the Autopal housings are HID-compatible. I have no current plans to go in that direction, but if that changed I'd want a complete properly-designed setup.

I made an offer on a pair on ebay. Hoping to get 'em for $40 including 100/55 bulbs shipped. I think that should be bright enough.

Thanks

I think you'll like them, definitely hard to beat for the price. I stuck with standard wattage since I did not want to attract undue attention with overly bright lights. (The E-Code housings are not street-legal in the U.S. despite being superior to DOT.)

You can see the difference between Autopal and the other brands in post #40 of this thread. Seems like they hold up okay if you don't put them into an extreme situation.

I won't be doing any offroading or fording streams so hopefully they'll be OK for a while. I considered putting a thin coat of dielectric grease on the rubber boots to improve the seal but decided against it, I just pushed them on as tight as they'd go.

No H4 capsule will withstand submersion.

The only reflector that is HID compatible would be to use a Bi-Xenon projector such as an aftermarket designed kit, or to retrofit one yourself.

These are DOT approved and actually look like they might hold up to some minor water submersion as well (I would check with the company directly though).

EDIT:
Here is a good retrofit guide for the DIYer;

I've had Cibies, Hellas, Marchals and the like.

The Autopals are just fine for a ton less money.
