Best HD SYE for a 231?
Is your HnT giving you trouble, or do you just not like it?
With a HnT you can move it to another tcase. With the traditional SYE if you ever break a tcase you run the risk of breaking that SYE as well, bringing your replacement cost that much higher.
If its just to replace to have a full SYE, why bother?

May have snapped the output shaft last weekend on eagle rock. Haven't been able to get into yet, but some thing grenaded in there. Just thinking about beefing it up while I have it apart.
As long as the HnTs didn't fail then its not the weak link and shouldn't need to be repaired.
At this point you could find a cheap replacement and install your HnT and drive away. A bit more difficult if you had a traditional SYE.

i have searched high and low looking for someone who had broken a hack and tap, and this the closest/best thing I found with reference to hack and taps
I kept hearing he same thing and after seeing one on a local well used Jeep that is a running an LT1, Currie 9" Axles and 37" tires, and he can smoke the tires, I felt pretty comfortable getting one (hack and tap) for my I6 TJ with 33" tires.
Well the weak link is probably the smaller OEM output shaft correct? If that breaks, I still need to open the case to remove it and cut off and tap a new shaft right? Or is my noobness being apparent? I'm trying to get thing so it doesn't break in the first place.

yeah if your output shaft broke and didnt affect anything, you could get an SYE and it would replace the broken shaft and you'd have a true SYE. however, if you damaged something else and go with a new Tcase then the HNT will be easier and cheaper to redo on the replacement tcase than getting a new SYE

Gotcha on that. Will have to tear into it this weekend to find out exactly what's what.
BUT, in the meantime, does anyone have any real time experience with the several different mfgs of SYEs and could shed light as to which one is better than the other....just in case I go that route?

i went with Advance Adapters. i went with them because i only wanted to buy an SYE once. i did this to my t-case, and i just gutted the case and put the SYE in the new t-case.

plus when i called AA about ordering one, i spent about 30min on the phone just shooting the crap with the guy talking about wheeling and jeeps. we probably only spent 10min talking about the SYE. pretty cool company if you ask me...

lol. I agree with everything to that point unless you can cleanly install a SYE in less than a half hour, which is how long it takes to do a HNT
