Yes, best to use airsoft or dynabeads http://www.dynabeads.ca/
Somewhere there is a chart of approx how much to put in each tire.

I use Dynabeads in my street bike tires and they work really well, if you order Dynabeads all you have to do is take out your valve stem out and pour them in and air your tires back up. As the tires spin so do the beads and where the tire is more out of balance they stay there more.

Don't use BB's, epically if you use air to inflate your tires with.
The moisture in the air will cause the BB's to stick together. This will keep them from functioning properly.
Dynabeads do work wonders. If you use Dynabeads, you won't need to have the wheel weights on the wheels.

Please don't answer if you don't know the facts.
There are a bunch of ways to balance tires other than with weights. Many have been mentioned here. Also look at Equal and Centramatic.
There are lots more

Guys with bigger tires have been doing it for years because some larger off road tires are hard to balance. From what I understand it works best with tires 33'' or larger. Its also good off road because you dont have to worry about knocking a weight off on a rock or something and being out of balance all the drive home.Thought of doing it my self.Oh yeah and for a big tire if you fill em up through the valve core you will be there all day(break the bead and put em in then remount)

I used these in my '82 Kawasaki... 1oz in the front and 2oz in the rear tire. They worked flawlessly. At 50mph on my spedo with no weights on the tires I let go of the handlebars and the front end would shake bad... had the Dynabeads put in and at the same speed, same tire psi let go of the handle bars and the bike was smooth as silk. No vibrations, no wobble, no nothing.

i ran my 33 inch trxus with 13 ounces of copper bb's in each tire.
mix those with an ounce of anti-freeze and they won't stick together, or get hot to melt into the rubber after a long drive.
the only downfall is they hammer the inside of the rim when coming to a stop, taking off the paint, but the whoosh of the bb's sound cool when stopping.
and when you go to get a tire patched at the tire shop, and the kid comes to you with a hand full of bb's with a puzzled look on his face, is priceless.
even better when you tell him to put them back in. lol.
been running them with the same bb's for almost 7 years now.
for 36 and larger, use golf *****.
