Axle swap and gear matching
So I've been looking around on axles and now have it boiled down to a D44 ( I think the guy wants to much ) and a 8.25. Then I hear something about making sure the gears match up, and that's my question. I have google and searched to no avail, so could someone tell me if I have to do this, and how can I tell? I remember a tag on the punkin ball on one I had, but both axles ( nor mine ) have this tag telling the gear ratio's
Any insight would be great
Thanks

If the axle is out of the vehicle. Turn the hub exactly one full turn and count how many times the yoke turns. 3.5 turns is a 3.55 gear, slightly over 4 turns would be a 4.10 and so on. If it's still in the vehicle block off the front wheels and jack up a back tire. Put it in neutral and do the same thing. If it has a locker you'll need to jack up both back tires. Not all XJs came with 3.07s and 3.55s, there are other options out there and you need the front and rear to be the same.

Honestly out of all the things you said in your question i do not recommend doing a axle swap yourself... you have a lot to learn before attempting such thing... and i mean a lot... i dont mean to sound like a dick and im sorry if i do but id just hate to see ya kill your jeep boss...

Huntingman-- thanks for the warning. I'm lucky enough to have a fried that ownes his own machanics shop( and owes me plenty of favors ) Plus the guys from Tomken, so where I fail they will pick me up. I just want to do EVERYTHING I can without their help.
Either way thanks to all that replied

the best way to be 100% sure on gear ratio, pull the diff cover (you probably need to change the oil in it anyways) and there should be two numbers stamped into the ring gear, one of them is going to be the number of teeth on the pinion and the other is going to be the number of teeth on ring gear.
the carrier and gears i just bought say "10-41" 41/10 = 4.10
