Ax-15 or aw4
Hello I have an 88 xj Renix 4.0
D30 BA10/5 231 d35
Everyone tells me to get rid of the tranny and rear diff
I wanted to know what's better
This xj is my only vehicle and I DD
Also my weekend wheeler
I like my M/T for dd but wen wheeling a auto is so much Easier
Im looking to replace my tranny and fix my motor with my taxes
I found a 91 ax-15 with 200k for $100
Also I found a 92 4.0 aw4 and 231 with 160k
For 250
Now I know that the hole drivetrain is a steal
Everything works on both
Motor trans and tcase were pulled because rust issues
Ax-15 was pulled to swap an auto
Bt he only has the ax-15 for sell nothing else

I've heard it cost 1500 for the parts to do the swap
I found a 91 ax-15 21 spline
Not sure if it's internal tho
Is it a bad thing if I have an internal
I planed on replacing the clutch and slave cylinder b4 the trans go in
Would I be better off to have a external slave and a 23 spline t/c???
What's the advantage of having a external slave ad 23 spline
I no it's stronger and easier to replace the slave on the out side
Bt is there any major con or pros between the two

658000+ km and counting on the Peeps AW4
Vent line off the top of trans carried up to top of dipstick and zip tied off.
No water crossing problems as I've seen develop on manual trans clutch with muddy water intrusion.

I am just almost done with my trans swap in my 89 XJ. I took out the BA10 and put in an AW4 because I like autos a lot more than manuals on the rocks. It is a lot of work and a PITA, but it hasn't cost too much.. I think I am about 3-400 into it and that is with the trans and tcase and parts needed for the swap. I finished getting the trans in yesterday. The last thing I really need to finish is the electrical.

I will attest to the Aw4 being tough as nails. but it absolutely needs a cooler
if I had my way it would be standard transmission all day long in the deep rocks. but low range gears are a pretty important addition to that.
for a light wheeler/crawler I'd take the 5 speed all day long simply for the deeper ratios and fuel economy

I would say go ax-15. The only thing an auto is better at is if you come to a dead stop in the middle of a steep hill. Working a clutch on the rocks is not as big of a deal as a lot of people say. It also makes you pay attention when you are driving. And as a plus you tend to ride your brakes a lot less.
I have an internal slave on mine, not really a big deal unless it goes out. You can find an external ax15 or just do a conversion if it brothers you. Will need a new Bell housing fork and slave cylinder.

Does anyone have a detailed write up with everything that I need to do the swap
I've been looking and all I find is bits and pieces
I'm still a little confused on what exactly I need to compete the swap

Ax-15 all day long, if u rock a new internal slave should be good for many miles , also super easy swap , took me a day and a 100 bucks with the cost of the trans.
