What all would be involved in swapping an NV3550 into a '96? I know the obvious things like pedals, slave cylinder, flywheel and such. Will the NP231 I already have in the Jeep work or will I need to swap in a different input shaft? Driveshafts I assume especially with a 3 1/2" lift and the standard being shorter? I plan to drop an ATK 4.7 next summer and would like to match it with a standard. The base 4.7 they offer is suppose to work with a factory computer, so I'd just need one from a '96 that had a manual, right? Also the crossmember from a manual?

I've thought about a 6 speed from a TJ but I don't think this would be as straight forward and I've heard they're problematic with miles one them. This true you think?

I have thought about this swap as well and am also curious to see what everyone thinks is required.

If you do a little research, you'll find that a decent amount of TJ guys have had issues with the 3550's. The AX15 is a stout tranny, I see no reason to take the 3550 over it.

agreed and u wouldn't need to do any work to do the swap if u already found a jeep with ax15 In it

From what I've read they're suppose to be about the same strength wise, some point to the NV3550 being slightly stronger. I also liked the lower 1st gear over the AX15. Would a Factory '96 crossmember not work with it? How much harder do you think it'd be to get NSG370 in there? After researching that a little more the problem with it was popping outta reverse and that one only for the '05 model. Only bad thing I've come across on it is the input torque is rated at 272 FT LBS and the output is rated around 1000... the NV3550 is rated at 300 FT LBS with nothing listed about input or output... Got that from Novak. The engine I want is suppose to put out 280

Would a factory crossmember not work with a NV3550 or NSG370? I'm not against an AX15 and I know all factory '96 stuff would be compatible with it. Just looking at other options too. Although I am leaning towards the NV3550 or NSG370

My cross member worked but I was standard shift all ready. Went from ba/10 to nv3550 . Could not beat the price . Keep in mind tj has different clocking than xj.

That's good to know. So I'll have to source an XJ one then, guessing a TJ one will be hitting something or hanging to low? Sounds like I should have no problem using a factory crossmember from a '96 or any year that was originally standard if yours worked and it had a BA10.

But to be honest, if u are capable of swapping in something like that, I'm sure u can fab up something if the x member doesn't work out.

Probably drill new holes or something like that

I'm sure I could make something work, just easier to use factory stuff if I can

If I was to use an AX15 or NV3550 from a TJ is it gonna have the transfercase hitting something or hanging too low?

I think the TJ trans is better in a way as the t-case is clocked higher. You may need to massage the underside of the trans tunnel a bit for a little clearance to not have the t-case hit the floor. An XJ manual trans crossmember will work fine. But I would consider going aftermarket or build your own.

I would equate this to user error, especially since most of those that drive cheerleader jeeps claim that the D35 will hold up to large tires.
My MJ on 31's proved this wrong..

Might have to do little research on the TJ transmission

So are you in favor of the NV3550 over the AX15?? Am I understanding this correctly?

Just throwing this out there, my old XJ had 33s on it with a Rubi Express 4 1/2" lift. I wheeled it everywhere not being very gentle either with a Dana 35 that had a loose pinion bearing. Held up for quite a few years of my abuse before breaking some teeth off the ring gear leaving my driveway. Also had the lame BA10 in that sucker and never broke it... maybe I was lucky

I know somebody who wheeled a d35 on 36's and never broke anything but I also know somebody else who broke d35 on stock tires. It's all on operator's usage
