Are these pretty simple to install? I may want to buy one before winter.

They are fairly easy. Yo need a pin punch to drive the pin holding the cross pin in place, and I would suggest removing the carrier to make it much easier. I would also suggest a very small screwdriver to compress the alignment pin springs.

ah got ya. One guy said you'll have to do at least a partial gear set-up on an 8.25 axle if you remove the carrier. Unlike Dana axles that use shims between bearings & carrier, an 8.25 uses screw type adjuster under the bearing caps.

I that case, you might want to consider not removing the carrier. Watch those little springs though, they can disappear into the unknown if they fly.

If the pin is to soft it will flex under load just enough to allow the pressure on the locker to become uneven. Another important note: If installing bigger gears, do not grind the center pin! This is what I did and it will blow the locker apart every time.

When it was all said and done, I went with a Detroit and Aussie refunded my money.

Haha. That's why it took me 3 hours not two. But no really, for what most people do, hardened center pin has no grounds for a bad locker. I got my Aussie brand new and I haven't been nice to it. For most people the Aussie moves the weak point to the axles. You'll break one of those years before you lose your gears because of a center pin. If it was an issue, torq masters, who by the way, only sell Aussies, they would have resolved it by now.

The pin "flexing" was not from me. It was from a Torq Master rep. You can read all about my Aussie Locker issues on my build page. I went through two lockers each breaking on my first time out wheeling. I called Aussie and they had me check the hardness of the crosspin. I actually ended up buying a new crosspin after the first locker. When the second locker broke they again told me the pin was too soft. I tried to score it with a file and it came out okay. After taking tons of pictures and sending them to Torq Master, they refunded my money and asked that I send in everything. After looking at the locker and the cross pin Torq Master decided it was the way I had ground the pin to get it past the larger ring gear and into the carrier. We had a nice long conversation afterwards and they said they were going to start adding into their instructions not to touch the cross pin.

You can read their response here

The cross pin flexing...may or may not be true. I personally don't see how it could flex but I do believe it could wear out if it was too soft which would allow uneven cam pressure.

Either way, I would still recommend them and have been considering getting one for the front axle.

If you grind the pin down, and ruin any heat treating there has been done, I can see why it might break. Also removing material from it will weaken it further. This should not have been brought up. It is not a materials issue, it is an installation issue.

If installing on a D30, removing the carrier easiest way to install. If installing on a C8.25, leave the carrier in the axle.

spartans are sometimes cheaper than an aussie, but you're not gonna get much cheaper than that.

I just installed an aussie locker in my front dana 30 axle this past sunday and monday, I,m a slow mechanic. It went in fine, the only problem I had was getting the roller pin out of the carrier. I didn't catch if you were putting the locker in the front dana 30 or rear 8.25. If you are doing the rear, be aware that if you have the chrysler 8.25 with limited slip, the aussie locker won't fit. I can't give a review because I haven't been off road with it yet, this weekend I'm off to the Cove for trials though.

have one in my 8.25 and like it. makes some noise but you get used to it. easy install too. they don't make it for a 8.8 lsd carrier so i'll have to find something else soon.
