Default Alternator upgrade?

Looking to upgrade my alternator without spending a fortune. I've done some searching on the web but its near impossible to find any info on my antique. The ones I have seen are $200+ The stock alternator is a 7273 according to autozone. Any of you 1986 or older guys have to upgrade alternators before adding a winch. What one did you use? I'd like to upgrade from 78 amps to around 140 ampd. Thank you all so much.

According to the ACDelco info on rockauto, the 86 uses a 12SI alternator with vertical mounts and a 9-oclock position on the plug. The interchange data shows a whole bunch of GM cars so it should be pretty easy to find an upgrade. Looks like the 90 Grand Wagoneer had a 94 amp 12SI, also used on a bunch of GM cars.

12SI is a size reference, so you probably won't get any more power without modifying the brackets to accept a larger alt somehow, but I don't know anything about the first gen XJs

I used a 136 amp off of a GC and had it rewound to 160 amps, total cost $145. Plus I bought a new rebuilt 136 amp from a member here for $100 shipped and gave it to my son for his 98 XJ.

If you do upgrade you "must" upgrade your battery/alt/grounds wiring to larger wiring.

With many alternators, you can take your stock unit to an alternator shop and have it rewound with a higher output using the same case. A few people here have done that, and it was surprisingly inexpensive.

Thank you guys for responses. Boy it's hard finding knowledge on these 1st gen XJs. I have been scouring the web and a lot of s10 forums seeing what others are doing. I have seen a lot of guys running the AD244 but the only 2.8s i've seen have had serpentine belts. Im stuck with a v-belt. For Now.
Ive heard that you can swap pulleys over. I haven't measured the ID/OD of shaft and pulley. YET. Not sure if the size is universal GM and they all will swap or what.

(Fred/N0AZZ)I have replaced the old wiring and put 4 gauge wiring in while back.
I do have to replace the alt to batt. Recommended size??
I would be fine with going to a larger gauge through out if i need to

(extrashaky) I have thought of this. A friend of my dad owns a alt/starter shop. I was never sure how far they could take it, being that my stock is only 78 amp. ie cooling/overheating. I have a sub amp and fogs right now and want to add more lights and eventually a winch

(wrapstar) I will post a picture of the set up friday at the latest. work work busy busy.

Thanks again guys.

Check clocking and connector.... Just swap your pulley on if needed.
