I ran without carpet for years and put down the nice quadratec floor mats front and rear. Just this fall I installed a new carpet after I fixed some water leaks. What a huge difference in sound that made. . Also behind all my interior panels and on wheel wells is peel and seal. Lots of work but I think it's worth it if you don't want all the squeaks and rattles

I'll let Don and his site speak for themselves.

interesting, lots of good info.
he does say that closed cell foam, which is what i ordered is going to do nothing to reduce sound or control heat. He says it's just to act as a barrier and reduce vibrations. Well.. sound is vibrations and any thick barrier like that is going to do something to keep heat from passing right?

It'll do little to nothing for heat or sound. It may slow-down temperature changes, but if you're looking for thermal insulation, there are better choices. The vibrations he's talking about are things vibrating against other things. Its primary purpose is to keep the MLV from rattling against metal/plastic. Basically, the CCF is just a soft buffer to keep things from smacking into each other and making a new noise.

but a carpet reduces sound and heat transfer? not trying to argue, just curious. Open cell foam is breathable and allows air to pass. Closed cell foam should not, at least thats my general understanding. but it finally shipped yesterday! So hopefully by monday night itll be in and i can see for myself

Most things will technically block some amount of sound/heat, but I'm talking about making a *significant* impact, not a technical one. In the end, the CCF, while airtight, just isn't thick enough to provide much more than minimal, temporary thermal insulation especially considering just how many gaps there are for heat to get in/escape all around an XJ.

I'm not trying to discourage you; it's totally worth trying. I'd be equally concerned with any kind of air leaks around doors/windows (and the firewall) just like in a house.

Polyfill might also be useful to stuff a lot of the empty spaces in the XJ's paneling for a slight boost to thermal insulation, too. Just gut a bunch of old pillows for their stuffing or bags of the stuff can be had from fabric stores for very cheap.

true, there's good enough and then there's the right way.
good enough is gonna work for me this time, lol
I have a few slabs of memory foam I may put inside the rear quarters. If I get the chance I'll try to find some of that.

I still think ill be pleased. right now I have the entire hatch stripped down and I had to drive about a mile and just the plastic trim and little bit of carpet makes a huge difference. Im not shooting for 2015 Cadillac quiet and cozy, but just enough to make it more enjoyable to drive the family in

My time in the garage is delayed today but I'll probably work through the night to get it ready.. Should have pictures tomorrow

It seems to me the quiet expensive cars have thicker padding on the floors.Kind of like horse hair. My 2 door has some vents in the cubby on the passenger side that let noise in at the rear. Also check your hatch to be sure its closing all the way.
