Newbie Needs Help/Confirmation
Great Site! I have a 98 Cherokee (all stock) and it is my DD. Mechanically it is in great shape and will be my DD for 2-3 more years. I don't do any aggressive off-roading; just occasional use of 4wd when hunting or fishing.
I really want to lift my jeep and upsize tires and wheels mainly for looks but also for better off road performance when needed. I am overwhelmed by all the stuff I am reading. I am also afraid I am going to mess up my jeep by doing this and always be having to have it in the shop with issues related to the lift kit. I have read as much as I can on here and I think I have my plan in order, but I just want to hear from some of you pros that I am on the right track and that I should be ok with what I plan to do in regards to maintenance issues.
I am going to do a 3 inch lift. Most likely Rough Country or Zone w new leaf packs because my current leaf pack is sagging very bad. I am still researching kits, but I am leaning toward one of these two. Will my ride quality improve or suffer from this? I get conflicting reports. My ride sucks now w the original stock shocks and leaf springs being worn out.
I want to run 31x10.50s.
I want new wheels and am looking at 15x8, but I don't know what the backspacing should be?
I have an option on two good deals right now, I can get a set of the nicer Jeep Spoke Alloys from a guy for $75. I know those are probably 15x7s but they do look nice. Can I run the 31x10.50s on those wheels and clear everything w the stock backspacing?
I also have an option on some American Eagle Alloys 15x8 and they have 31x10.50 BFG ATs already on them with 40-50% tread left for $300. I really like the wheels and the tires but I don't know how to confirm for myself that the backspacing is correct?
If I do the things above will my drive line be ok and will I have clearance for the tires? I don't want to do any cutting on the jeep for clearance.

If your ride is horrible now then it won't get any worse. It may improve and it may not. It's going to be stiff at first.

Usually you want around 3.75-4"s of back spacing. That's enough to set the wheels out a bit, prevent rubbing.

You MIGHT have issues with the tires rubbing the lower control arms one stock backspacing. You could easily adjust the steering stops and solve this issue.

Sounds like something worth looking into. I'd guess something like 80% of aftermarket 4wd wheels are going to be around the back spacing you' want. It won't hurt to ask the seller what it is. You have about a 2% chance of the guy having any clue what backspacing is so you may have to explain it to him. lol

You might have to trim a tiny but nothing that would be noticeable at all. Primarily the inner fender plastic. Shouldn't have to trim the flares at all.
