You can put 37's on 2"s of lift if you trim enough and bumpstop enough. I won't say that it's extremely practical but it's doable.

This piece of **** sitting in my back yard is at stock height, stock wheels and a set of 33x12.50x15 tires.

With 2"s of lift it would be perfectly wheelable. It wouldn't rub anywhere.

The key is in the bumpstops.

Here's a 33x12.5 mounted with no lift:

You can see it fits, but I couldn't drive on the road like that, let alone offroad. That's as far as I could turn the wheel, and I could only go over a 3" bump before my tire hit the fender. There's no way the rear would've fit, even with my moderate trimming.

As for 31s, I'd advise trimming for a 2" lift. I have 30" street tires on my stock-height MJ now, but I'm swapping them out for 235/75s with tread.
If that were a narrower tire on an 8" wheel it'd fit a LOT better. Those 10" wheels cause a lot of issue with the clearances.

I used to run 31's with no lift and it wheeled great! Just like everyone has said, bumpstops are key

You don't think the BW cut out flares would get in the way due to backspacing and full lock at 2"? You can only trim so much and still put them on.

well I had 2 inch spacer and add-a-leaf on my 2 door, and 31's fit perfectly. did not rub. I took it wheeling and had a lot of fun with it..
But it is a daily driver. So I don't want something huge. Just something to have fun with, mild wheeling, and camping.

That is really all I am trying to do with this one. Plus 31's are just cheaper than 33's. What is the minimal lift you can do with a set of cut out bushwackers and for 33's?

this is the 2 door with the lift on it, and 31's

Do you have enough room to put some fender flares on over your trimming to make it look better? or is the trimming to wide?
I don't mind doing a little more trimming, but I dont want it to look like a hick truck.

Wait..so what you are saying is you think it would fit with some trimming on a 2 inch lift? I was planning on trimming 4 or 5 inches off and then install Bushwackers, but leave it at 2 inch lift. But that plan was for 33's

I had a 2 door that was lifted 2 inches, and i had 31 10.50's on it and they were fine.. no trimming required...

You can put 31s on a stock XJ, and I think you'll just rub your control arms. Like I said, I have 30x9.5s on my stock MJ, and I only have issues if I turn full-lock left (because I never adjusted my steering stops). I guarantee you can put the tires on with a 2" lift if you trim because I did it stock. With 33x12.5s on 15x10s on my XJ, like I said, I could not have driven it as it sat. I would've had to trim more than I did and then bumpstop. I don't know how much you can trim and still install Bushwhacker Cut-out flares, and that's why I was saying I wasn't sure.

Right, And that is exactly why I thought 33's may fit on a 2 inch lift if I did some fender trimming. I was just trying to get some feedback.. to see if someone had done that or close. There is a guy further up in the thread that had 33's on a stock xj, but he had his fenders cut waay back. and like I don't want a truck that looks like crap. I know its an xj, but i want it to look decent.
The bushwacker site says to trim 5 inches.. With a 2 inch list that seemed like all the clearance I needed. But I would have to bump stop it. but thats doable to a certain point.
Thanks for your feed back

I am looking for new wheels too to fit in with the lift tire combo..
The wheels I want only come in a 16x8. or 15x8.
If I were to just stick with 31 10.50's could I get away with the 16x8?
Also what would be a good back spacing? I want a little wider stance, but again, I dont want to get pulled over for them sticking out. So thats what the bw flairs are for.

Trucks! on Powerblock TV did a 2 dr XJ with a Skyjacker valueflex 3" lift, BW cutout flares, and 33x12.50's

only time they encountered a problem was when rock crawling in a rock garden - but the only "problem" was popping off one of the bolts holding the flare on when they had the steering at full lock and stuffed the tire up into the fender - to which they indicated they just needed to extend the bumpstop.

Ok thanks for clarifying ill probably get the 3.5 with no drop brackets

Im not sure if this question has been done too much yet or not, but you can fit 33's with bushwackers flats and good bumpstopping (one of the vendors on here has a picture of it done). Looks good and the lower center of gravity. 31's with a 10.5 tire looks silly though because the flare sticks out farther than the tire (which makes it legal in states where it matters, but I think it looks much better with the tire past the flare). Not sure if I went off subject there but wanted to put that out there.

A 16x8 rim/tire combo is going to be more expensive for both parts. 15x8 means more rubber and I've always felt that is better. 3.75 is the backspacing I have with my 33's on 15x8's with no issues and I'm fairly sure that most of the main websites have this one available.

That all just depends on what rim backspacing you have. With the rims I have, the 31's will stick out just a tad past the fender flares. I have 235/75's on it right now and they already stick out past the stock flares... when I had the 255's on it they stuck out so far you would have thought my jeep was an indy car driving in the rain... rooster tails shooting up from all four tires when I was on wet roads.
