I getting ready to install a 3 inch zone lift on a 1999 xj this weekend and have two quick questions. There is some significant rust and I want to replace the hardware.

Noob questions.

1. Can I use nuts and bolts from a hardware store? Grade 8 stuff? Or is there special automotive hardware I should use?

2. Does anyone know the different hardware pieces (and sizes) I will need to complete this kit?

http://zoneoffroad.com/zone-offroad-...erokee/j21-j22

I am also replacing the shackles and bump stops.

I know I can wait until the bolts are off to run to the store and get the proper sizes but a friend is helping me and if I can have everything on hand I can save him some time (trying to be considerate).

Thanks for your help.

You can use grade 8 stuff but I perfer going to speciality nut and bolt suppliers and running grade 10.9 which is what the factory uses.

I'd just use grade 8 stuff if you can find it all in long enough lengths. The dealer should have the leaf spring bolts you need. They're a M14 x 2.0 pitch x 120mm long, class 10.9, flange head, nipple tip bolt. The shackle box and main leaf bushing bolts thread into the frame nutsert so they'll have to be one of those bolts (thread pitch and length wise, the other stuff doesn't matter), the shackle bolt can be another of those or a Grade 8 9/16 4.5" long with washers and a nylock nut.

The shock bolts should break/ come off pretty easily. They're a 13mm head stock which should be a roughly 5/16" bolt about 1-1/2" long should be good. Looks like you won't need any other hardware other than that. Front bumpstops press in and the rear ones use a 13mm or 15mm head bolt that goes into a nutsert in the frame rail. It'll probably be a metric thread pitch, pull one out and go get a replacement.

Grade 8 is an SAE rating. Class 10.9 is metric. They're approx the same.

SAE 5 =~ Metric 8.8
SAE 8 =~ Metric 10.9

And if you can't find what you need at the hardware store this is where you go. http://www.mcmaster.com/#

If you have a can of PB Blaster might want to hit the hardware a few times. I'm currently installing the same lift on my 97, it took a 4' cheater just to break my shackle and spring bolts loose. Hope you have better luck.

I live in san Diego, the places I mostly go to is the local deserts ocotillo wells area and big bear every now n then ill go to the high sierra's area. The 3.5 has done good but I have found some of the climbing I do I have to find different runs that take longer because of clearance issues. I have been debating on either 33" or 35" tires haven't decided yet but the lift is going on just wish gas mileage wasn't effected so much

Can't help you until you state what width tire you plan on running. Diameter has nothing to do with wheel width.
Try saying that 3 times quickly!

Assuming 33x12.5, you'll want 8" wide wheels. If 33x10.5, get 7" wide if you don't plan to go larger in the future
