I realize I'm a bit late to this party but just in case anyone is still following. I did this mod and posted a while back with only the purpose of freeing up the space occupied by the air box and wasn't looking for any performance boost at all. This works only because I did the cowl hood thing. After running this for almost a year now I can say it's working great and I have the following observations:
1) I did feel a kick in the pants. As I wasn't looking for any boost I don't think this is my mind playing tricks on me. K&N filter, cool air... Whatever.
2) During a water crossing over my headlights last summer this obviously made a difference.
Lastly, sounds pretty cool without being annoying.

That's a cool design, man! Do you have any pics of your cowl hood? I could see this working really well for bringing in cooler, drier air PLUS depending on the design of the cowl, offer heat extraction out the back of the hood versus using hood spacers or vents.

Here's a pic of the hood. It definitely does bring a lot of air thru the engine bay and even standing still the heat pours out the cowl opening. If I put a stock hood on I can just barely close it without hitting.
There is one gotcha with this. I can't open the hood all the way as before. I can only go to the first hole for the prop rod. Any further and the cowl jams against the wiper arm. I pop the wiper off if I need to.

When I tested under hood temperatures with multiple digital temp probes, that upper rear of the engine compartment was the hottest.
However when using 1" hood lifts, this hot air is vented out and helps keep the underhood temps in better check. 1" Hood lift works at sitting/idling and also at speed where the air flows out.

Yeah, I'd seen too many of them like that and knew from the get-go I wasn't going to make the same mistake. 2 to 2 and a half inches is the limit before you run into ugliness.

I don't hate it, but I don't really like it either. It looks too humpy toward the front, which makes it obvious bordering on ostentatious. The other one above appears to have a more natural slope to it that I doubt most people would consciously notice if they weren't intimately familiar with the vehicle already.

The more I look at this the more I like it. So far only one thing concerns me is the cowl scoop. If you do a lot of driving on dirt roads the high pressure air forced in from by the windshield brings in dust and debris with it. I've had my hood raised 1/2" and w/o the gasket for more than two yrs. I've seen debris forced in to the opening (like leaves and bugs). Right now the drive to my house is like driving on 1/2 mile of talcum powder. With no rain in sight I put the gasket back in and lowered the hood. Cowl induction scoops are a great source of cold air but it seems there can be a drawback under certain circumstances.
COWL INDUCTION SCOOPS
Many scoops face forward, in the direction of the oncoming air, but every so often you’ll see a reversed scoop, facing away from the air stream. Why? On most cars, the area at the base of the windshield is a high-pressure area. If a reversed scoop is mounted close enough to the windshield, that high pressure will help to force air into the scoop. For the same reason, many modern cars, even ones with no performance pretensions, take their interior ventilation air from ducts in this region.
