I'm tired of tediously fixing others peoples messes. yes this is the lazy route and I'm glad I've done the engine work that I have because it's custom to my needs. but it's a pain doing all of it. so take a mechanic with you to look at whatever xj you buy
Definitely need to bring one along just in case somethings hiding

Brand what? Gears and set-ups?

National, Timken, Yukon, Any of the big names. Ya just can't cheap out on bearings.

Next time you're at the parts store ask for an A37 in a Masterpro brand and the same bearing in a Timken. Take them out of the box and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Makes sense but mine came out to 4.001... (really long number) for 33s haha so wouldnt that mean 4:10s would be better than 4.56 for 33s? I did diameters for the new/stock tires.. would that be accurate? since everyone says to run 4.56 with 33s
Not criticizing by any means but I'm just not sure if either I entered something wrong or who knows.

4.10's may have been the number if you entered in a manual transmission

I ended up with 4.56 gears so I can run 33's until I'm ready for 35's. it's not a huge difference. the 4.56's will be enough for 35's but I've researched the "what gear" question a lot and lots of guys with 35's wish they went with 4.88's

I really cant make a recommendation because it truly is preference vs. your daily driving. but here are the accurate numbers

Aw4 np231 4.0 (numbers rounded)

3.55 gear
stock tire: 2050 RPM @ 65MPH
33" tire: 1750 RPM @ 65MPH

4.10 gear
33" tire: 2050
35" tire: 1950

4.56 gear
33" tire: 2200 RPM @ 65MPH
35" tire: 2150 RPM @ 65MPH

4.88 gear
33" tire: 2400 RPM @ 65MPH
35" tire: 2280 RPM @ 65MPH

Hey! That's Mike's calculator!

I run 35's and wish I would have gone with 5.89s.

Hmm sounds like if i regear and get 33 or 35s 4.56 would be good for me. Im mostly on level ground, would occasionally drive highway and it would be daily driving which for me is alot of stoplights in the city :/ so i want as close to stock rpms as possible since I stop and go a lot for everyday driving.
But before i blow all my cash on regearing id rather start off running 32s stock for obvious cash differences. Plenty of people run that so it cant be too terrible.. I dont live in the mountians or anything.

yeah theres more varaibles in there but gives you a rough estimate, however (33/28.3)*3.55 should come out to 4.13958 and 4.10 gears are cloest to stock aka your gas mileage gear then you bump it 1 size for your performance but still daily driver (personally)

you probaly just didn't put in the () math rules Multipcation before divsion so if you just plug it in without the () they do 28.3*3.55 =X then 33/X= wrong number

97-99 3k plus depending on condition

99-01 I have seen them from 3500 to 6k. depending on mileage and condition.
Good chart there. I paid $3500 for my '97 in good condition. Area may play 10% into it. But, Striker is right on track with the prices though.
