Just jumped in the jeep to run to the store, and my trans has gone out
so figure the AX-15 swap. Here's the big question how hard is it to do?

Have you done anything to diagnose the problem or are you hell bent on an AX15 swap?
What year is your Jeep?
I'd start by at least figuring out what's wrong with the AW4.

If you click on the little "cherokee" icon on his user thing, he has the trans listed as "manual". So if that is correct, he might be talking about the Peugeot BA10/5 to AX15. In which case, the swap is pretty easy, most parts are interchangeable, I think the main different thing is the pilot bearing.
However, manual transmissions don't usually "go out" on the way to the parts store, and they are rarely affected by jump starts, so maybe it is the auto.

Well it's a 89' manual trans
I took off the boot and looked down there, looks like a broken black plastic thingy ( I assume that's the shifting fork?
But what it's doing/done is it's stuck in 1st. With side to side motion ( feels like neutral )
I'm not he'll bent on doing the swap, but if the tranny is fried I figure why not make it better

Fair enough Lowrange, haha. For the OP there are a few really good threads on the internet about this. (also about swapping the transmission to an external slave- the AX-15's were internal slave until 94 IIRC.) a simple google reveals plenty of info on the topic. I personally haven't done this swap yet, but am planning one for the near future.
