Yes you got ripped off. But that was when you bought the AEM setup for an XJ. Who cares what color the filter is.

I didnt ask for a smart ***. I know the cold air intake on a xj is stupid, but i didnt know that until AFTER i had ordered it. Im new to jeeps and am learning the ins and outs slowly. And its not the color i care about its the type of filter...but anyway thanks a ton for your useful comment glad you took time out your day to look at my post and reply with an anwer that doesnt help me one bit....

Also, last I checked a CAI on an XJ isn't stupid. I know someone did a test and saw an improvement. Nothing "OMG GLORIOUS" amazing, but a gain nonetheless.

As long as it is well insulated from the underhood temps, then a CAI will work on an XJ.

Thought about just calling AEM? Where did you buy it from that makes you think it's not legit?

I got word back from AEM and they said the new red one's are identical in flow and filtration to the old grey one's, but that if I still wanted a grey one to check back at a later date. The grey one's part number ends in BF (brute force?) and the others end in DK. According to the email the screen mesh is there on the red one's to straighten airflow and strengthen the filter.
read this. says the "red" filter is then new design. I wouldn't worry about it.

Ya, you can get gains. There's always variables though. What did he have before putting in the CAI? Just saying that the gains were probably not from the "cold air" you supposedly are getting.

What kit is insulated well? The only way to do that would be to totally isolate that part of the engine bay and route air from outside to the intake. A little sheet metal shield won't do that.
