Are you sure it's the right dipstick?

If you're pouring single quarts they can be a slight bit shy from oil coating the inside of the bottle so I can see maybe a 1/4 quart extra at most to make up for that. If you're at the low line you're either a half quart or full quart low. Did you run it before checking it?

You say "all the way flush with the first rib" meaning there are no ribs showing or there is still one showing? If there's still one showing then your dipstick isn't seated fully and would account for the 1/4'' or so worth of dipstick that's not hitting the oil.

Still though, at 7 quarts I'm pretty sure that my stock motor would be reading at least at the full mark. I think I put in 6 quarts and hit it towards the high end of the readings. It's been a while since I changed my oil though, I'm due for that haha.

there are two ribs showing. the one is at the base of the hole in the block and the other is jus there. is the first rib supposed to go down into the block? it would make sence but i wasnt sure. i thought it wasnt all the way down either but i tapped on it lightly n it didnt move very much.

Is your oil pan by chance dented? The dip stick should damn near touch the bottom of the pan...

I would put about 6.2 quarts in and hit the junkyard for another dip stick.

Sounds simple but are you sure it was 5 quart jug. The jugs of oil I buy are just over 3 quarts. I think they are a gallon?

They're usually 4 quart aka gallon jugs.
Got a photo of where the dipstick tube is pressed into the block?
