Default 96 xj won't start after rebuild

Ok I have a 96 4.0l xj with a 5 speed trans just did a complete engine rebuild I have fuel and spark but it only cranks over. I have poured gas down into the intake to see if she will fire up and nothing I am not getting any backfire burp or anything through the intake so right now I'm totally confused. I helped my buddy rebuild his bout a month ago and it fired right up no problem at all so any help would be appricated thanks

Fuel and spark, and no start? That's interesting...check for a ground cable/wire that is loose, or not attached.

You can still get spark of the CPS is bad. It just won't be in time properly. Change the CPS.

Actually you wont get any spark. No power will get to the coil if there is a major fault with the cps.
How do you know you have spark?

Umm. Yes you can get spark with a faulty CPS.

If the timing is right and you have fuel and spark you need to check compression i know you said its a fresh rebuild but things happen.

And yeah if the cps is bad you wont get any spark.

True..if valves are adjusted incorrectly, or not at all, you will have no compression, also during the rebuild, the piston rings should have been installed with the gaps of the rings all pointed away from each other....

^ That. I just posted over in the OEM section with pics of the newer style distributor...

And actually that's after #1 cylinder. I believe the rotor turns clockwise, or does it? Either way, that pic shows the correct position.
