I have a 01 xj with auto trans and 242 transfer. I was wondering how hard and what I would need to swap it over. I have a complete 94 xj. Could I use my 242 transfer seeing that people say mid 90s + have 23 spline. I'm swaping motors from a 98 xj I have and colums. So I figured I'd might as well look into it. Should be fine. Allegedly an NP242 behind a stick makes shifts a *****
Do you have an internal or external slave?
You'll need to tackle the PCM issue. There are a few threads on here about that, apparently the most effective, if you don't install the PCM from an 01 manual, is to fool the TCU into thinking the AW4 still exists, vs disconnecting the TCU itself.

All of them apparently. I think there was something to do with the AWD mechanism causing binding. Been a while since I looked it up though.
To get your 01 to run without codes you need to trick it into thinking all the solenoids are there (resistors), and wire your clutch interlock switch and reverse switch into where the NSS was. Maybe somethig else too. I saw the details in a thread about building a 'manual' controller for the AW4
