I picked up an overhead console, brackets, and wiring from a 1991 XJ at the junkyard and am in the process of installing them into my 1996. I already cut the headliner.
The junkyard harness has 3 plugs and my dash harness has 2 plugs that fit but has other empty plugs in the same spot that are not being used. Of the two plugs that plug into the dash harness, not all of the pins on the dash harness have wires but though the console harness does. The dash harness plugs on the donor appear to have different wiring and all the pins have wires (I have the dash side pigtails).
Nothing in the console turns on or is working. Has anyone gotten this install to work? And tips on wiring?
Does your XJ have electric door locks?
And what model is your XJ? (Sport, Larado, Pioneer, or just Base)
Also have you downloaded a factory TSM? They have schematics for all the wires.
It would be beneficial to also down load a 96 TSM to cross check wire colours.
I put an overhead console in to my 93, but I had to do a WHOLE bunch of wiring, and ended up cutting the factory connectors off to use Weatherpack connectors.
I don't have power windows or door locks, so I did not have to use those wires.

It has manual doors and manual locks, although I hope to install power windows/locks (already bought the doors) so if I don’t have the wiring for that then that’s another headache for next month.
I don’t have a TSM or factory service manual. Any tips on where to download one?
If your Jeep did not come with anything power, you do not have the "Light Group" wire harness inside.
The different connectors on the OHC include wires for the Unlock-Lock features on the Laredo model, and the Limited model as well as for the compass & Temp display.
There will be quite a bit of wiring to be done since your Jeep does not have the Light Group harness.
Make sure you don't use a screw gun for the phillups screw in the front of the console. In fact make sure you degauss the screw driver before you use it there, as the compass module will be effected by magnetism.
I also found it to be easier to take my front seats out to get a good position to install the console on its mounts. http://cruiser54.com/?page_id=365
Just pick years close to yours.
