Default 5 speed to auto conversion

Simply put, my XJ has a 5 speed and is in need of a clutch. there is a guy locally parting out a '97 XJ that also had a 4.0.

He has an auto tranny still in it, though he has sold the engine and transfer case.

How difficult of a swap would it be to replace my 5 speed with an automatic?

Is it even possible? (without re-engineering everything)

How would I go about it?

Well one you will need new gears. 3.07's with an automatic will be terrible.

No offense but this is the worst idea possible. The auto's are pigs and yours will keep its value higher as a 5 speed. Just replace the clutch dude.

Thats the plan currently.

The only reason I even considered it is my wife hurt her right shoulder pretty good (recovering from the surgury that reattched the tendons to the bone and such right now)

It's going to be a long time before she is ready to drive a manual again. Her car is an automatic already, so she has something to drive.

I was just curious if it was even feasible, since it would give let her be able to drive my XJ if needed.

I hear ya, I can understand your point but tell her to stay in her car or sell yours and buy and auto. It would cost you less and you would likely come out on top. Manuals are usually worth twice as much.

cause they're twice as good! Ya I said it guys!
