Everyone hears "3 row radiator" and assumes it's better, because more is better, right?

It's all about coolant flow and air flow. The engineers who built these things were pretty smart.

is it actually boiling over? those temps don't look unreasonable and could be a gauge issue? i think you might have to much technology

Hey folks, new here but was following this thread for a while. I also have a golen 4.6 + alot of extra weight and lift. Above GVWR without towing for sure.

Temp reading results, each taking the same 8% grade for several miles at 65mph. The hill is about 8 miles from my house with some rolling grades leading up to it. Ambient temp was about 75 degrees.

Temp measured at crest of big hill. I also tested with a 1/2" restrictor in the upper hose to see if the flow was too high, and interestingly it did help in a couple scenarios.

With 1/2" flow restrictor in upper hose:
Mishimoto + 160 tstat = 230'
Mishimoto + 195 tstat = 220'
Stock + 195 tstat = 210'

No flow restrictor:
Mishimoto + 160 tstat = hit 220' before I even got to the hill, aborted
Mishimoto + 195 tstat = 215'
Stock + 195 tstat = 197' <----!!!

Still getting hot (up to 225) in 95 degree ambient desert sand. I am still running the heisco t-stat housing and pump, and a ZJ clutch...so not completely stock. May try OEM versions and report back at some point.
Minor update - I tried swapping out the stock style radiator with a CSF 2670 2-row copper/brass radiator. I chose this radiator because the specs seemed closest to the mopar HD 2-row that is no longer available and seems highly regarded.

After a burping session and several heat cycles, I took it on a test drive. Immediately I started getting higher temps, up to 220 degrees just merging uphill onto the freeway. I put the stock rad back in and it's back to the normal 195-200 temps.

I have a hunch that there may be air-flow issues specific to my XJ at higher speeds. The temps do not rise in stop and go and come back down when I exit the freeway. But either way, the stock radiator still outperforms everything I've tried so far, by alot.

*****,

What part of the country are you in? I am in Southern Nevada, and having similar problems.

Cheers!

I’ve been in the mountain west with the stroker — southern Idaho, Utah, Colorado. All three areas get into the mid-90s.

Put a second temp sensor on head somewhere or i guess even probe tge radiator you should then be able to monitor thermostat.

I think youve put 2 tstats on in this thread. This may not be enough tstat count to get a good one that works properly installed.
