Default 4.56 or 4.88 gears

I just put 35s on my jeep and figuring out what gear ratio to do. I was told 4.88 however it's a daily and was told by someone else you can't go highway speed with 4.88. So I was thinking 4.56 instead.
I have stock Dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25 rear
Auto trans
And a 6.5" lift

What ratio can I do and still be able to use as a daily driver.

Yeah 35s on a daily, I only drive in town mostly and barely go on the highway.

4.88's....you won't be disappointed. You can still do highway speeds. Just don't expect to go as fast as a Ferrari, LOL

There's a chart on this link that shows gear/tire selection rpm's. Check it out...

For 35's I'd run 4.88's... Unless you like driving over 80 MPH+

Mine was a daily on 35s with 4.88s for a year no complaints took it on the highway a few times did 75 with ease. Also had 33s on it while my new tires were on back order drove fine put a lot of imports to shame.

Currently: 27/35x3.55=2.73:1
Regear:
27/35x4.88=3.76:1

The 4.88:1 will bring your Effective Gear Ratio to that of a 3.73:1 gearset. So your Xj will act on 35s as if it had stock size tires and 3.73:1 gearing. So go with the 4.88:1 [emoji106]

I run 35's and recently went from 3.55's to 4.88's. Love it

My daily has 33" Wrangler duratracs (so really 32.4") and 4.88s and I love it. I can do 80+ no problem.

I'm runnin 35's with 4.56 & am really pleased. Could use a bit more on the highway going up hills, but she'll run 65-70 with out a problem. Great around town.

Got some gas mileage back. I don't hardly fill up like I used to with stock gears & 33's.

If you go with a higher gear (4.56) you will have better top end/highway speeds. With a lower gearset (4.88) you will have better low end take off and torque. But either are better than the 3.55 gears.

2600 rpm @ 65 mph sucks. That's what I'm at with 4:88s and 35s. 4:56s were much more enjoyable on my old jeep as a daily driver on the highway.

"sucks" is subjective. my 4.56's with 35's was great around town and on the freeway. what sucks is that it was a total dog when hauling camping gear up the mountains. one side of the stick is always gonna end up short. I say go deeper

I think it has a lot to do with the condition of your motor as well. My current DD is an 01 with a really strong running motor and with 33's and 3.55's it's barely noticeable over stock. My last XJ was BEAT and could barely hold OD on the highway with 31's.

Basically what I understand by reading all of these is that 4.56 is better highway and 4.88 is better for mountains and inclines.

Majority of my daily is mountains and I probably go on the highway 5 times a year.
So either is better than stock but for my driving I would be looking at 4.88 and if I go on the highway with those I will be at a higher rpms then the 4.56 gears driving at say 80.
Right?
