You absolutely have to know what you are doing and have the proper tools. I've never tried it and i have no desire to try it. Like i said before, the easiest thing to do is find someone parting out a 4 cyl. xj and buy the axles out of it. They will already have the 4.10s installed...

Ok so I've been reading all post on advice on 4.10 vs other gears . Most of the postings are recommending 4.10 over 3.55 while using 33" tires so according to all the posting in this tread and thanks to the guys here and there wisdom that I just learned 4.10 are pretty good gears
I was about to star research on changing my 4.10 to 4.56
Thanks

I am running 31s with 4.10s and its great, the speedo is a little off, I am installing an advance adapters sye now, and they came up with a very nifty speedo gear chart on the back of the instructions. This chart involves tire size and gear ratio for the np231 t case, and it will tell you the mopar part number and gear color for said speedo gear. I cant post it up cuz of copyright rules, but I'm sure if you call and ask nicely, advance adapters might hook you up with this neat little chart.

I'm running 3:55's with 33x12.50 and believe it or not my speedo has not changed . I've also ran 31x10.50 and 33x10.50 and my speedo stayed right on target as well. I have drive by those digital speed monitors numerous times and have been dead on with my speedo.

unless your 33's and 31's are the same height as stock somehow.
theres no chance with stock gears and stock speedo gear that your speed would be correct. it doesnt work that way
use a GPS, then return to this thread.
Im runnin 33x13.50s and have 4.10 gears its not hard to change out the pumpkins as long as you know what you are doing and have proper tools also while you have your differentials apart I would put in ratchet lockers. Then the only other things you need to do to your jeep to get it to go up or over anything in your path is at least a 3" lift but I wouldn't go over a 5" lift also you might need a slip yolk eliminator if you go over 4.5" and of corse a good set of tires probably 33x13.50s. Then you have a wheeler that will go farther than the military hum vee
i have 33x12.50's with 4.10 gears. the speedo is 1.5 mph slow meaning that my gps says 65 and my speedo says 66.5. the 4.10 gears are great until i try to drive 70 mph on the interstate. i have an automatic transmission. it constantly wants to shift back and forth between drive and overdrive at that speed. the slightest incline or head wind will keep it in drive constantly. i am seriously considering 4.56 gears.
