whats the difference between a 33" tall tire and a 285 tire. 285 closer to a 34" tall tire? or smaller?

33 is how tall. 285 is just the width.

Gotta calculate it, for metric tires the first is the width in mm, second is the aspect ratio (70 means sidewall height is 70% of tread width ) then rim size. Overall height is 2x the aspect ratio plus the rim size

Nobody has ever been more wrong than that. 285 is the width of the tire, 75 is the sidewall height (75% of the width) and yes, 16 inches is the rim size. So you were right about one thing

That's not how metric tires are sized
It's tread width/aspect ratio/ rim size

Most 285/75R16s are roughly 32.5 x 11.50 I say roughly cause each manufacturers tire may be plus or minus 1 inch in height or width. The calculations are just for a rough measurement, but pretty close.
