Which is what I would be doing if I upgrade this 27, Id would leave it be or just go all out and replace everything.

Oh, the difference in shaft diameter between the 27 spline and the 29 spline is .04
27 spline=1.17inch, 29 spline=1.21inch.
I dont buy this. I know thats what it says everywhere, but I threw a 29 spl side gear over the top of a 27 spl shaft and the gear was enough bigger that I could spin the gear without touching the splines together at all. Well over .04" difference. Only other possiblity is the 27 spl shafts are ground down at the splines or the 29 spl shafts have splines above the 1.21 shaft. I wish there was a picture somewhere or that I had taken one, its a pretty significant difference

The shaft diameter isnt where the splines are, splines will almost always be bigger than the shaft

naxja.org
thread all about it. looks like its a significant difference to me. but i would still run a C8.25 27 over a D35...

haha, top picture is basically what I wished I could find. looks significant IMO. And bottom picture pretty clearly shows why the 27 spl carrier cant be used with 29 spl side gears

Nice to actually see the differences. Thanks for the pics! Ill still be at easy wheeling with the 27 until I decide to go all out.

looks like the splines are external cut on the 29 and cut into the 27, explains why it is so much bigger at the splines but apparently not the shaft
