27 spline 8.25
Ok I have the chance to pick one up cheap. Is it worth it to swap out my d35 for this 27 spline 8.25? Or should I wait longer and pay more for a 29 spline?
I dont plan on running much more then a 33 for the time being (32's right now). If I want to go to 35's will it handle it like a 29 spline or no?
Btw Im picking it up for 30$

I under stand that part, but I wont be in the position to upgrade those right away. I was thinking do this swap, then when I wanna go better I upgrade the parts to 29 but use aftermarket stuff so it will be nice and strong.
Does that plan sound good?

if you plan on putting a locker and upgraded shafts then just do it. the 27 spline is better then your D35. and with a locker(29spline) and shafts(29spline) it will be a "upgraded 29"

Ok cool they have lunch box style lockes for the 27 correct? I do light wheeling for right now so I might pick one up. Then resell when I upgrade since it might be a year away.

Yes they make lockers. Ive been running my 27 spline 8.25 with 33's for over a year with no issues. I swapped like you are from the D35 to the 8.25 and do not regret it. I used to bend/break shafts with the D35, no issues yet with the 8.25.

the 27 spline is a fine axle... is it as good as the 29... no... is it $30 good? DAMN SKIPPY!
I have one and love it... they do make lunch box lockers for it
many people say that the 27 is weak... but honestly it is almost as strong as the 29... the issue is that there are NO decent after market axles for the 27...
basically you can;t upgrade a 27 spline the same way you can a 29... but you can upgrade a 27 to 29 spline

its generally going to be cheaper to swap the complete axle than to swap components, as swapping to 29 spl carrier is going to require setting up the gears. 29 spl axles are under $200, no shop would even set the gears up for that price

I agree its great, especially for $30, but have you seen the difference in size between 27 and 29 spl axles? its a really big difference.

Oh, the difference in shaft diameter between the 27 spline and the 29 spline is .04
27 spline=1.17inch, 29 spline=1.21inch.

yeah but if you are going to install a full carrier locker and high performance shafts instead of a lunch box you might as well convert, the cost and prices would be the same then
