I had posted in other forums about something that i saw on gojeep's site about taking out the rubber strip at the back of the hood the place he called the "sump" in order to improve cooling. My concern was water, but the strip sits in a trough like place which would guide the water to the sides and down to the ground.

removed it, and temp dropped 7-10 degrees. I typically i ran almost on top of the 210, now it sits 190-195ish. I have single core radiator and stock xj clutch.

After it rained i went out and looked under the hood for water and noticed it was pooling on the sides of the bay a bit but its nothing a peice of hose cant fix to funnel the water to the ground.

Second thing I read about I think on this forum about relocating the Air temp sensor. I took it out of the lava hot manifold and put it in the top of the airbox just above the ecu. I plugged the hole with a brass plug i got from home depot. Holy cow what a difference. It starts in cold weather better, much smoother idle, more umph to the tires and its looking like a slight gain in mpg. Also it doesnt run like crap when the engine starts to get a little hot. I have no idea why all the 4.0's to my knowledge had this sensor in the hot manifold sitting directly above the exhause manifold.

At any rate 2 things that took 1/2 an hour that made a improvement all around.

Makes sense to do this considering most vehicles have the AIT in the intake box or tube.

The headpipe (right at the exit of the exhaust manifold) has a "crush" in it. It appears that the factory put it there to clear the front driveshaft. Not true. It was put there to slow down exhaust flow and heat up the catalytic converter sooner. If you have a 3" lift you can have a downpipe made identical in shape to the original without the "crush". If stock height, you have to make the swoop with two 45* bends in the pipe instead of the 90* like stock.

 

Nice mode. But what about people with cold air intake? Since there is no air box just a shield from the heat.

 

Nice mod? Drill a 7/16" hole in the tube and thread the IAT sensor into it.

I know this is probably a stupid question but will this effect smog at all? California is super strict with smog crap and I had a nightmare selling and smogging a truck last month because of some "mods" someone did.

 

For some reason my DS knuckle was still hitting the pipe when I replaced my exhaust earlier this year. Had to take a hammer to the tube.

 

My jeep is a california emissions vehicle with the 2 cats in the exhaust manifold. I dont have any codes after this. IHO i think i should help smog issues bc the ecu is seeing the correct ambient temperature that the vehicle is running in and adjusting various parameters accordingly, not the temp of the hota$$ intake manifold. Just make sure you put the senor in the top half of the airbox, not the bottom. moisture and dirt that gets in the bottom may effect it.

And yes in aftermarket cold air intake systems just drill the hole and put the sensor as close to the air filter as you can, preferrably on the finder side of the pipe not the engine side. Most of the cai systems i have had on other vehicles had a place in it i had to plug for such sensors.

Speaking of plugging holes, the plug is at Home Depot with the brass plumbing fittings. It's a "square head 3/8" MIP plug" made by WATTS. Hd sku# 552-240 $2.25. It will thread right into the hole that the sensor was in so you can always put the sensor back in the manifold if you wanted to. You will not want to.

The orignail author of this mod got another sensor and put it in the airbox and left the orginal one in the manifold to switch back with just the plug if he wanted to.

Just get some extra wire, 2-3 ft and splice into the factor sensor wire and extend the plug for the sensor wherever in the airbox you have the sensor.
