I just bought this jeep and went to add 10-w30 (recommended to use) with some of that oil additive to help seal small leaks. On my way home, I started smoking terribly on the freeway (white smoke from the looks of it). I got home with no problems, and the vehicle seemed to be running fine. It just scared me because I had my infant son in the car and didn't know if I was on fire or not... I wasn't. Anyway, I just want to know why I'm smoking - the more gas the more smoke, by the way - and if I should be mildly annoyed, on edge, or terrified. Thanks a bunch people.

Your post raises a couple questions..
*"..went to add 10-w30.." You took the jeep somewhere to get the oil changed?
*It never smoked before the oil was changed?
I wouldn't be too concerned about smokey exhaust.. but I would have the jeep checked out by a professional to get an idea of the shape it's in, and any possible issues that need to be dealt with.

smoking from the engine bay or the exhaust? if it's from the exhaust then you added too much oil and are now having blow by which goes away eventually

I added the oil myself, as well as an additive "sealer" to potentially stop small leaks. I ended up adding about 2 quarts in all, but don't think I overfilled it. A friend told me the additive may be cleaning out some gunk that was in there and that's why it's been smoking. As of today, there is significantly less smoke, but it's still smoking from the exhaust. I looked under the vehicle and saw that there was a lot of saturation from oil underneath. There were also telltale splatter marks around the outside of the vehicle in the rear by the tailpipe. I'm really inept at automotive troubleshooting but try to keep my eyes open. I hope this helps. I will take it in to see a professional soon. I guess my question still stands - whether or not I should be concerned. It still runs like a top, by the way.

Ok.. your post makes you sound a little bit retarded. You just bought a jeep, then you went somewhere and purchased some oil and some sort of oil treatment which you then poured into your engine w/o ever checking the oil level before or after adding it?? Thanks for that. I just bought a jeep. there is a small oil leak. I bought oil and a sealant additive. I checked the oil level - it needed some oil. I added a quart and the sealant additive. I checked the oil level again after 10 mins. No change in the level. I added another quart. I checked the oil level again. Now it was up to the appropriate level. I then drove the vehicle. Within about 2 miles, my James Bond smoke screen kicked in. Sorry for not being succinct and descriptive with my every step. I understand it would have helped. I say "but don't think I overfilled it." because I have never overfilled the oil in any vehicle. No oil escaped the fill chamber and poured onto the engine. It wasn't filled to the rim. As a newbie, I don't know if Jeeps from this time have an overflow system that I am not aware of, or if there was something I was missing. Simply naive, not retarded. If you can't help me, fine, but keep the insults to yourself please. I'm simply on this site to find helpful answers. If my explanation doesn't work for you, ask me to clarify. I'm no mechanic and didn't know you would need a step-by-step of my every move in putting oil in the vehicle. Simply put, I put oil in the Jeep and it started smoking from the exhaust.

Was the engine cold when you seen this smoke? Is it possible it just may have been steam from the exhaust?

any time theres oil saturated under a vechicle theres reason for concern even more when theres children in the vechicle find the leak b4 you become news at 6 car fire on freeway...
