1991 cherokee NEW to jeeps!!!!
Hey everybody, I am Brandon and I am new to jeeps and new to this site and I just aqcuired a modified 1991 cherokee. I have a few problems i would like to get to the bottom of and general knowledge of the truck because i am a GM man and have been all my life, chrysler is foreign to me.
Here are the mods that are done (ill list the mods first then problems)
98 HP front axle
96 ford 9" rear
Custom 6" lift
Shift kit?
4.0
Custom bumpers and sliders
Now problems are-
Starts fine then will not start, not turn over at all like starter isn't there
Clanks and crunks and makes noise turning like a binding sound hard turning
Motor will miss on the last two cylinders in rear when throttled heavy for more than a couple min (mud playing) then will continue to mis until plugs are removed and cleaned and even then may still miss (plugs are dry when removed)
4wd high will sound like it disengages it will almost free spin and sound like the gear just isn't engaged fully
I think that is it for now its a lot I know but I am foreign to chrysler products and even more foreign to 4x4!!
HELP ME PLEASE!!
Thank you everybody

Here are the mods that are done (ill list the mods first then problems)
98 HP front axle (HP what axle? Dana 30?)
96 ford 9" rear (Full width? You're certain it's a 9"?)
Custom 6" lift (Post up a picture.)
Shift kit? (Automatic? You're going to have to be more precise. The only "shift kit" I'm aware of is an electronic shifter. Sounds like a load of crap from the PO)
4.0
Custom bumpers and sliders
Now problems are-
Starts fine then will not start, not turn over at all like starter isn't there
(Try starting it in neutral or jiggle the shifter in and out of park when it won't start. It's possibly the NSS isn't seeing the correct gear and needs to be cleaned)
Clanks and crunks and makes noise turning like a binding sound hard turning
(This could be a multitude of things. Is the front axle locked?)
Motor will miss on the last two cylinders in rear when throttled heavy for more than a couple min (mud playing) then will continue to mis until plugs are removed and cleaned and even then may still miss (plugs are dry when removed)
(Do a compression test. This could also be a multitude of things. Does it do it when the Jeep is dry? Distributor getting wet?)
4wd high will sound like it disengages it will almost free spin and sound like the gear just isn't engaged fully
(You either need to adjust the shifter linkage or rebuild the t-case. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume it has a t-case drop and the linkage is out of whack.)

I was told the front diff was locked and ready to go but my lack of knowledge about 4 wheel drive proceeds me and I have no clue if it is or not, dont know how to check either. I figured the tranny "shift kit" was a sham fyi it will not shift to second and will only shift manually.
I dont know how to check if its a dana 30
Ford 8.8" sorry
Posted a pic of lift
See previous post about tranny
I tryed going into nuetral numerous times to get it to start and its only worked once
I dont know how to see if the front axle is locked or not
It starts missing whether it is dry or wet out, heavy throttle seems to cause it. New plugs and wires and cap looks newer
And for the linkage I do not know how to check if things are loose, twice now I have had it in 4hi and not been able to get it back into 2hi, some driving and a loud clank and it goes back in.
I wish I could be more help but it is all foreign to me. I hope I disnt get too ripped on it I took the jeep and cash on a trade for my boat. With what I payed for the boat 2 weeks before technically I payed 1000 for the jeep, I thought it was worth atleast that.

Okie dokie. I took a look at your pictures.
To be on the safe side I'd do this:
http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoNSSrebuild.htm
That is most likely going help with your no start issue.
As I suspected, there appears to be a transfer case drop on the Jeep now. That puts the t-case shifter linkage in a bind. You can see how it's at an angle between the t-case bracket and the frame bracket. Those should be lined up correctly.
You have a Dana 30 front axle and 8.8 rear axle.
Without pulling the cover on the front axle there's no way for me to tell you what type of locker is in the front. Again I'm going to guess and say that it's a lunch box style locker. Probably a lockright. I'd imagine it's probably worn or has broken pins. That usually causes binding and popping. You can easily pull that out and replace it with stock spider gears or replace the locker. I'd suggest pulling the cover and taking a picture and we'll go from there.
The misfire is going to be difficult to diagnose. The first thing you need to do is a compression test.
Let me know.

Ok I will clean the nss, as for the linkage how is that fixed? And with the front diff am I able to pull it off and save the gasket? What do I jave to get so I can put the cover back on, fluid? Gasket? As I said I know next to nothing that would be basically general knowledge about this. I will do a compression test when I can get my hands on a tester. Right now fixing the nss, linkages and figuring out about the locker will take up my free time I dont have. But has to be done.

I'd suggest putting stock spider gears back in it. Depending on what gears are in it (Probably stock) you may have to remove the carrier and ring gear to get the locker out.
The linkage... ideally you want it level so you can either remove the t-case drop dohicky or you can replace that whole linkage set-up with a different one that doesn't use that part. The Novak shifter for example. Plus another company on here makes a much cheaper design but it's name has lost me at the moment. Keep in mind that if you remove the t-case drop you may need a slip yoke eliminator and drive shaft. Cheapest route would be replacing the linkage with a different style and leaving the t-case drop.
I'll look for the linkage.
