Alright here's a little background story of my 1999 XJ. I bought her about a month and a half ago and she was in pretty rough shape, primer on about a 1x1 area on the hood, the front passenger quarter was a lighter red than the rest of the jeep which is a darker red almost burgundy, and the existing paint wasn't the hottest from all the rock chips and such from treating it like a jeep all its life. For those following some instagram jeep builds, I got the idea from @laterslater on Instagram when he transformed his ZJ from white with a black hood to a sick desert tan color for right around $100. I already Bed lined the front and rear quarters to match at least a little bit so I didn't have a multicolored jeep, now she's all red and black, but with a little background painting experience From my brother and I, I feel confident in our abilities to paint it and look good so im looking for suggestions of not only colors, but what type of rattle can (brand, consistency, price ect.). Open to other ideas also! Thanks everyone
If you are going to bed line the entire thing buying it in a can is not the best route. I did my with can Bedliner and it is not very consitant. Some spots look better than others. I used rustoleum tan bedliner on mine and I can see in a year or so it will be repainted with normal spray paint.
I use rustoleum Bed liner for A lot of my projects, I painted my trailer with it, I paint the flag poles I make with it, I painted my bumpers with it, I painted my lawn mower with it, and more and it has all held up well. I've gotten used to how it sprays (I've used like 30 cans of it). I can usually get a pretty consistent look out of it and I love the stuff. When my paint starts looking crappy I'll buy a bunch of rustoleum bed liner and paint it myself.
Looks good, how long will the paint last thou is my only question.
Who cares.. Throw some tape up and freshen it up. I cleaned, sanded, cleaned again, wiped with acetone. Then sprayed 4 thin coats to build something to grip to and then 4 solid coats. That area in particular takes a beating on trails with rocks and things flying into it. Its an easy touch up.
