Im afraid there is no manual 4.0's, however as a previous auto-hater it is such a brilliant 4x4 system that can switch between 2wd & 4x4 whilst moving, upto 60+mph! and you also get a power switch allowing you to redline before changing gear, which makes it scarily fast! i got a lovely "95 xj limited with 75k for £800 it needed probably 400 spending on it to make it spot on, expect to pay upwards of £1200 for something with around 120,000, please dont be scared by high mileage though, alot of xj's on this forum have done 300k plus and are still going strong ( i must stress only in the 4.0 ). also expect some electrical faults that usually end up being fuses! or loose/broken connections.
LPG is epic by the way you don't notice it and it also happens to be 57p per liter! most have tanks in boot but mines in the place of the original fuel tank with a small 20L petrol tank too. i get equivalent of 32mpg!
although i used 4wd in the wet before your mpg will suck! just take it easy with the 2wd and save some pennies!
the best of luck buying, if you want an opinion i'll be more than happy!
oh and by the way, you can get free mileage and mot checks on line, they can be clocked and it gives you peace of mind with it being government based check

anyway i will stop rambling now... hit me up if you need a e-hand!
hope that was helpful

Hey again and thanks for all the welcomes.
A day out at Wild Tracks sounds like it could be a whole lot of fun. Give me a (good) few months to sort out my jeep and I'd like to help organize something.
I will keep my eyes open for 4.0 LPG cherokees because they do really sound that good. I might just have to get over my anti-auto mentality lol, the only auto I have ever driven was an ancient vauxhall cavalier with I think 3 'gears', it wasn't much fun.
My main problem with auto (maybe just my perception tbh) was that I thought they were very inneficient. Also for offroading, can you prevent them from changing up gears so you can keep revs up? If I do end up getting an LPG version I will probably be the biggest newb on the site. First 4x4. First LPG. First auto...the list goes on Also, how does petrol/lpg do in deep water? I ask as I know you can put a snorkel on a diesel and basically use it as a submarine, is it much harder to 'marinise' the electrics in a petrol/lpg? I don't plan on doing a daily commute through 5' of water, but would be nice to be able to
I hope you don't mind my ramblings poeple...
About the 4wd/2wd. I quite enjoy the back end being light, aslong as there is room to play/fix it ofc It is for my gf that I might suggest 4wd in the wet. I'm kinda buying this jeep for a recreational toy for me and she can commute in it (I do 70 miles a day and she does 16, so i'll prolly stick with my boring 1.9tdi for work). She is not really into driving and has never driven rwd, I just have visions of her losing the back end, flooring it and, at best ending up facing the wrong way.
I think I have taken up enough space on this post. Alex, I will most definately ask your opinion once I narrow down my search, thanks again for all the info, it is very much appreciated.

well you will find that the majority of the off-roading rigs on here are auto, you can select either 1-2 gear or 3rd or even low range. the power switch allows you to keep the revs up without changing up a gear with it being designed for this and towing. As for efficiency you don't generally buy a 4.0 for that however due to the large amount of power and torque from one of these engines it doesn't make that much difference as it it would say on a little 4 cylinder. as for making your own submersible i have no idea, i have seen some awsome yank xj vids on youtube nearly upto their roofs ( these being petrol 4.0's) with snorkels but ive no experience, i love my xj too much to do that to its super comfy interior .
as for the traction, if she doesn't floor it or carry too much speed into corners she will be just fine. lpg is a walk in the park and the auto couldn't be much easier either. just make sure youve got some lpg garages near you, i have have loads but when on holiday near loch lomond their was sod all!

Wow that is some serious snow!!! I'm just hoping I have suitable wheels in time.
Not related, but I just saw this:
I feel sick!
Thats excellent that most of the off roaders are using autos and excellent that you can select gears and keep revs up with the power switch. I think I have bene converted! I'm not too fussed about efficiency, but it it was lower than 20mpg or equvalent it becomes costly to use as a daily runner. I think the LPG option is the way to go. Heaps of power and affordable. Nice.
You raise a good point about the interior, I am unlikely to want to trash it either. I would like to maybe lift my jeep moderately (about 3" I think) and get slightly bigger wheels, for looks partly and also so its that bit more capable off road. I checked our area for LPG vendors and there are some, not heaps, but enough. Nearest one is about 6 miles from my house, so thats all right What sort of range can you get on a full tank of LPG? I saw an ad that said 200 miles. More would be better, but my old non-turbo Imprezza only got about 220 from a tank of petrol, so its ok i guess.
All I need now is to find a suitable one for sale

well i get around 180, its no big deal for me like, but just look for a bigger tank, mines a 70 but you can get 90's and i think even into the 100's just depends how much room your willing to sacrifice! as for the lift yeah it looks mean, but god they aint half hard work to drive or so the people i know with them anyway.
my main aim is now to get some driving lights/fogs on, without bullbars, as cheap as possible.. nightmare

Hello,
I'm another newbie, just bought a GC 2004 2.7 diesel. ( actually bought her in Norwich,)Got a couple of minor probs which are in the process of being fixed but I love this car. Use it for towing a caravan and with the cruise control on: just so relaxing. Can pick up her skirts and go too, if you put your foot down.
Brian.

Hey Brian, welcome to the forum and grats on your GC.
I need the advice of the forum...again. It is still a few months (2 hopefully) until I am going to buy my first Jeep, and I am totally sold on the 4.0 LPG version now, but I am having trouble finding any for sale in the uk (been trying autotrader and pistonheads). So unless a Cherokee that is already converted comes up I think I have 2 options:
1) Buy a non converted Cherokee and convert it myself. would be about £2.5k I think (jeep+conversion)
or
2) Buy a converted Grand Cherokee. These are much easier to find and I've seen plenty from around £2k-£3k.
What do you guys think? I've tried to compare both and they both seem really good. I think both are capable off road, both are ultra comfy, both are good at towing. I'm kinda swaying to the GC side based mainly on availability, as long as I won't be shunned here for having the 'wrong' jeep.
Any opinions or comments welcome, cheers.
