Hello from Norfolk
 

Just thought I'd say hello from Norfolk, England.Had my jeep since August last year, '91 limited 4.0l always wanted one of these,but today found out may not have it for much longer as sounds like engine may be on last legs, still was able to enjoy for a while. Have to say forum has helped with some of the other troubles we had, thanks to all who post and answer.
Am havings electrics done then hope to nurse her along for a while!!Will then look for another that has maybe a bit longer to live!!

I got my first Jeep last November, a '93 XJ Limited SE, never let me down! I got it for £600, spent around £900 on various mods and essential electrics (Blimey, I could tell you some stories.........).

I've always wanted a Cherokee ever since I saw one steam past me on the M1 in 1994. I wasn't in the slightest bit jealous when a mate "acquired" a '96 XJ for the princely sum of £25 (yes) a few years back :wallbash:

Maybe the engine isn't knackered? MIght just need some TLC?!

There's a few excellent Cherokees in one of my local junkyards. I would be down for a engine replacement. As long as you have the beer. LOL.

Hi thanks for encouraging words! update! Had a big long list of electric replacements an oil change(2nd one as first incorrect) an earth not right and a hole in exhaust!! sounds much better now only small amount of knock on cold start, and we can get uphill without all the misfires!! Hopefully with tlc we can keep going. We have some more lumping noises at back so thats the next job to find(sounds like from rear axle area) not too healthy when off road! hope we don't leave it behind!! still good to have her back, will bear in mind engine offers can always fit plenty of beer in back!!

Just got my first jeep a few days ago, a "95 limited 4.0 with lpg got quite a deal too, £800 with only 76,000 on the clock. anyone else running Gas?

ive got plenty of things to do though i mean firstly the electrics, both front seats not working and stereo etc... but shes in at a local jeep specialist soon so will quickly be back on top form i hope anyway.

how did everyones jeep cope with the unusual amount of snow we last winter?

not a bad acquisition to say im 19 and havent even been driving a year!

i hope the engines ok, there should be plenty of 4.0 knocking about on scrappers, maybe your tappets etc might need looking at?

Hi sounds like you got a good deal, we just missed out on a gassed up version so don't venture too far in ours!!! good luck getting sorted, our prob was started by a blocked oil filter,so oil pressure showed way up but wasn't getting to right places, she's still going at the moment though turning heads for all the wrong reasons!!

ah right, thats unlucky mines been changed just before purchase but the idiots not fitted it right soo its dripping oil, must get round to doing it before my folks make me shell out for a new drive.....

also turned out the electric faults was a pesky little 15amp fuse!

I guess I shouldn't really be posting...yet.

I'm planning on buying a Cherokee in the next few months. Looking to get a 1996-2000, 2.5 td Limited or something similar (any opinions on this are welcome). I really can't wait as winter is just round the corner and this will be my first 4x4.

Thats all really, just thought I should say hi somewhere as I am new to the forum and I live in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Nice to see such a healthy appreciation for such a cool vehicle.

don't worry i posted here to get an idea or two about jeeps before i purchased my first ( nearly a month ago now )

now the diesel engine is allright, its a common engine my dad had in a ford a while back however i seriously suggest getting a 4.0 with LPG on, its just bomb proof ? plus im getting more than 30mpg with 190bhp?
just a thought anyway!

get a limited aswell, wow those seats are comfy!

I myself am also very much looking forward to winter, my first whilst driving last year was awsome in a ford focus, i did get stuck a few times ( driving through drifts with snow up to sills... whoops...)

oh and one main word of advice, dont boot it out of junctions or accelerate out of corners when wet in 2wd, jesus it can be back end happy!

I bought a 2001 xj on lpg for £800 about 18 months ago with a blown engine, the pevious owner ran it without coolant and it froze in the cold spell. Result was a crack running along the block just under the inlet/ exhaust manifold.:wallbash: Oil and water mixed and engine seized solid. Sourced a replacement 4.0ltr for about £350 with 58,000 miles on it and fitted it myself over the course of about 10 days. Engine is super sweet and pulls like a train.This is one hell of a motor and i love it, get it fixed , you wont regret it.

hi have to agree its a great motor just shame we didn't figure probs out sooner where i bought it seemed genuine but looking back there were some odd things like not mentioning drivers door lock not working and not parking it in their yard(steering fluid leaking) just seems she had a bit of neglect, shame cos as you say its a great motor which will go anywhere and in comfort(had several Dhiatsu's of varying types before) next job is brake fluid change as light coming on sometimes and had a very scary moment when towing horse trailer !!!

thanks for the info Arc 4.0. I hadn't really thought about an LPG conversion... it sounds very interesting though. I wonder if you or some others on here could answer a few questions on the topic.

Can you get a 4L manual LPG Cherokee? I'm not a big fan of automatic transmission, but have only seen auto conversions so far. If I could find such a Jeep I would be very tempted to go for it. What kind of price range would I be looking at? And lastly, how many miles is a 4L Petrol/ LPG conversion good for (incase I end up looking at high mileage ones too)?

I think I will get a Limited if at all possible, they just seem the best value all round. Thanks also for the info about the light back end! My gf might well be driving it so I think I'll suggest she ONLY uses it in 4WD :p
