Ive been reading these forums awhile and I have notice the number of teenage XJ owners. Is it because the low starting cost of purchasing one? It seems a lot of them are into doing rather extensive modifications to their trucks as well. I know when was in high school i never had money to do mods to my car lol.

anyways nothing wrong at all with teenage owners, i think its cool actually, just an observation from an old guy!

No offense to young oweners myself but I know many young folks are financed by parents. I was at a dealership doing some work one day and an employee was detailing a new F-250 Harley Davidson edition that was a High School graduation gift for a 18yr old. $50k gift, WOW.
I don't understand the logic behind this myself but to each his own.

My first xj and my current xj and all mods were financed by meeeee. I know what you're saying. But I work hard. My Dad has helped me along with mechanical things since he owns a mechanic shop and he specializes in heating and cooling as well. So I get the opportunity to use ever tool you can imagine as well as Hydrolic lifts. but that's why my xj is a slow build. because I do things while saving for college and working and going to highschool.

K2 I understand what you are saying. My folks have helped me financially before as well. Im not ashamed to admit it, but they never gave me a $50k vehicle.
I commend you for working to earn your own money for your own expenses. Its too bad many young people these days are raised with an "entitlement" mindset because mom & dad gave them everything they always wanted. It's these people I worry about when their folks are dead and gone and they finally have to work for something.

any money i earned when i was a teen went towards bills (insurance, car payment, etc) and gas for the car! to be honest though i just worked part time jobs while going to school so im sure it would be different for someone working full time

Im 19. My parents put up the money for both my xjs ( first one got rolled) but Im currently in the middle of paying them back for the loan. I finance every mod myself ( which is why its taking forever to lift because I always find something new to fix) and also do everything to it. My dad used to be a mechanic so I have access to all his tools and he also helps me on the major things that go wrong but I never ask them to pay for parts cause I believe that's my responsibility to pay for anything that needs to be done or that I want to do

I don't have any money between school and bills, I may have to sell my XJ because every fillup kills me, owning an XJ is like owning a very special vehicle with a very expensive catch. I love it so much that I feel like each fillup is worth it but can help but think where better else that money could be spent....

Just bought my 17 year old his first car...a modified 1993 XJ...it was $3300...paid cash. Has the lift kit and rebuilt engine. It was reasonable for a first car and only needs liability insurance...which is cheaper. It was a better, bigger, safer choice for him than a sports car...and still looks cool and is fun to drive...work well since we live in a small Texas town. Love the stick because he can't text and drive. He did take out a few fence posts on his first trip down a gravel road (fishtailed) but the Jeep wasn't damaged due to the wench and steel bumper, and it taught him a little about respecting the vehicle and pushing it too far. I don't think he would have faired as well in another vechicle.

I consider it a project car. It is great because he has hooked up with guys on these boards and has really taken interest in working on it. I consider it a classic and think he'll enjoy it down the road. He just installed his sound system this past weekend that he did purchase on his own. I purchase the gas, insurance and whatever basic maintenance needs to be done to get him to and from school. All of the other stuff he will have to get on his own. I've owned 2 JGC's in the past and so far I am happy with the XJ for my son .

xj-92 I'm the same way, I'm 19 years old work full time an have a 95 grand Cherokee(stock) and my 2000 xj lifted and modded, and I've put every dime into both of them out of my own pocket, I hate when people think its daddy's money, I work just as hard as a man 30 years old amd work just as often, I pay for insurance, phone, housing, and everything, age has nothing to do with anything it's your work ethic, but while I was in school a kid I knew did get the newer gt 500 modded out, not the 2013 but still ran them a total of 68,000 for his first vehicle absolutely ridiculous but I also see 30 year old men that have their momma still buy them crap too

I'm about to be 20 and I have payed my whole way by working my tail off. I'm glad though that my parents don't pay for my stuff because it just give me he opportunity to do it myself. I have learned a ton just by fixing and upgrading my xj.
