I get 17mpg highway, 35's on stock 3.55s and an auto.

That's on my daily commute through some hills. 15 miles at 73 mph, and 35 miles at 57mph.

Shorter answer than that 26 page beast is that it's extremely variable. XJs on the market are between 30 and 12 years old. Since it's so hard to tell what's happened to a used vehicle, the previous owners' attention to maintenance is going to be a huge factor. Especially now that people are selling SUVs to get gas sippers instead of just fixing them in the first place! (You can find several threads on here like that) Some XJs you can expect to replace pretty much everything before it will run like it's supposed to - some are in decent shape. My completely stock 1999 with a 4.0L and the 5-speed manual gets me about 14-16 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway. On the highway I stick to about 65 and don't drive like a dick. I think something's wrong that's causing so poor city economy as other stick-drivers see around 20, but it could be because of how short my commute is. (Ahh, who am I kidding, as long as it says Jeep on the front something will need fixing!)

Another thing you can consider is what you want your Jeep to be for you. A lot of owners don't care so much about the fuel efficiency since they get so much more out of it. You're going to consider a simple daily driver very differently from your pride and joy XJ
The off roading scene is big here and I always had an interest for it cuz it looks fun as hell. Its going to be both my daily and lets go tear up some trails vehicle lol.

I have a 98 SE 2WD Automatic. Almost totally stock. Just took it from Nashville to Arkansas and back and averaged 20 mpg highway. In town I get 16. Some advice though. Getting a Cherokee is like getting married. Neither of my 2 Cherokees has ever left me stranded unless I was taking it apart myself and ran into a problem. They are tough as nails.. in that I mean they keep going even when something is broke.. I say it's like a marriage because you have to love the XJ or it just wont work out between you Maintenance will become a way of life. Not that its a bad vehicle.. generally maintenance is not hard to do... they are relatively easy to work on. But if you want to keep it running like a top for a daily driver you will learn to love junk yards. It becomes a legitimate relationship.. that takes time.. just saying.. Kinda joking here kind of not.

well I appreciate your honesty. All the guys that I talked to tell that the cherokee almost bulletproof. If I do end up getting her I know that it will be a BIG change. How much more maintenance could there be from any other car?

Not any more than any other vehicle of the same age, but remember these are 12-30 year old vehicles, it's not like a new car where you don't have to do anything but fluid changes for several years. Things will be old, worn out and need replacing (belts, hoses, suspension joints/bushings, etc.), allot depends on how much maintenance the previous owner did, if it is all up to date it will just be minor things, if maintenance wasn't kept up on there will be a ton of things you'll need to do soon after you get it, again its and old vehicle.

They are it takes allot to actually kill one but without maintenance they will run like crap, get terrible mileage, make horrible noises, and die a very slow death, with proper maintenance they can run well for a very long time.

So U rather spend $500+ on another car plus plates and insurance than to pay the $280 for the 02 sensors? Seems legit lolz
